Will Knoppix 3.4 / 2.6 safely and reliably write to XP NTFS? I have reliably used the BitDefender variant of Knoppix 3.4 (LinuxDefender Live! CD) to write and read to and from XP NTFS, but will Knoppix 3.4 / 2.6 achieve the same -- safe -- result as achieved when using LinuxDefender Live! CD?

It will if you use captive-NTFS.

Excellent results with safely reading and writing NTFS may be had by using the credit-card sized live (iso) CD from INSERT, in Engish and German. See http://www.insert.cd/ and download from http://sourceforge.net/projects/insert/ . Strong medicine, credit-card bootable live CD, Knoppix-based, and works with just about every available file system, including MSDOS FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, and the full range of linux journaling file systems. Very nice tiny bootable CD with a usable desktop besides.

Insert also uses Captive. I presume you had to go through the wizard first.

Yes, both INSERT and KANOTIX use the Captive NTFS wizard, and yes, both INSERT Live and KANOTIX Live have proven to be foolproof for me. Of course INSERT is a 50 MB live CD speedboat, while KANOTIX is your usual off-the-shelf full-featured 700 MB live CD battleship, with the subtle difference being that with KANOTIX, you can get an effortless DEBIAN HD installation in ten (10) minutes or less, by-the-clock, as I did. And as an additional feature that supports the growing body of English-speaking but German-learning and or German-using Linux buffs, KANOTIX speaks both English and German, in a manner of speaking, user selected at boot.
