under preferences , i have checked the alsa module but it does not work
Neither the alsa module nor OSS module work

I even removed and reinstalled alsa but that did not help either

how to fix this please?

Do you specify "alsa" on the boot command line?
Example: knoppix lang=us alsa myconfig=.....

alsa loads fine . The problem is not really the alsa but xmms i believe
All other media players like mplayer play sound fine . XMMS is what is giving me the problems as it is sayng no sound card found

ON my other post you can see the alsa modules showing up in lsmod ( snd_emu10k1 )

Take a look at the output plugin Xmms is using. Mine (although it's a HD install) runs fine with OSS Driver 1.2.8
