For any of you that have 64 bit AMD boxes you may want to try out this 64 bit remastered version of Knoppix. I don't have such hardware so I have no idea how well it works, but it's certainly a good idea. From the author's description it does have some limitations, but still seems worth a try.

Here's the link for those interested:

You would probably do better to email the fellow who remastered this version of Knoppix. I'm not sure where (or if) there are many 64 bit sources. At least this is a start though.

Actually the author makes this statement on his page:

apt-get will fetch the 32 bit packages, they will blend nicely over the installed system as on a standard 32 bit debian. This is because the 64 bit debian is not quite ready yet and the debian 64 bit repository (debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org) is not mentioned in the sources.list file.

it wants to deinstall the 64 bit gcc and more... can you please tell me what to change on the apt-sources to get rid of this?

You can try "apt-get -t unstable install kino" This may work, but I'm not sure. You may want to try it with the "-s" option first to try a simulation.

aaahhh so is "-t unstable" the option to let "apt-get" get sources and compile them ?

No. Knoppix is a mix of Debian stable, testing, and unstable. Because of this, upgrading and adding new pacakages can often be a headache. The "-t" option tells apt to grab the install from unstable AND resolve all dependencies from there as well. In my experience this keeps apt from removing various packages the way that it sometimes does in Knoppix. In short, it doesn't break things nearly as often.

Before I do this does anyone know what needs to be done after the install to get back to pure debian (aka kanotix)?

btw according to our content filtering stuff at work knoppix64.dr.ag is blocked as a sex site! Wow it must be really hot software :D

on apt I usually get rid of the unstable sources from my sources.list but keep testing. Ive mainly been using kanotix becuase the HD install is cleaner... but Im wondering if I should try this or just install gcc 3.4 and recompile my kernel (and then gcc !)

Has anyone else tried this?

You have to find a free proxy to get around stupid filters at work....

Can anyone tell me where to find the checksum for KNOPPIX64? I've downloaded the iso image but it gives me a checksum error. I am trying the cd on 32bit machine. Could be this the problem? Gentoo64 just says that the processor doesn't support long... bit.
Thanks

I try to boot from the 64 bit version of knoppix found from here:

And I get:

Hiya!

I loaded the image and burned it, so far all went fine.
Then I traid to boot the CD and it keep saying "only one processor found".
Any idea why?

My config:

Acer Aspire 1511 LMI

AMD Athlon64 3000+ (1.8GHz)
512MB RAM
WinXP SP2 Home (yeah, I try to change that... thats why I want 64Bit-OS-support)

So, what should I do, I'm almost a Linux-noob, but I try to change that. :}

I dont understand why it says "only one processor found"... sure my notebook got only 1... or did I missunderstood the message?

Btw. is there any "64bit benchmark" in that 64Bit-Knoppix? Would like to compare 32Bit with 64Bit somehow...

phiny regards!

the nosmpGrea cheatcode might help

thanks, great. "Knoppix nosmp" helped. But How do I now get a good benchmark-value that I can compare with the 32-Bit Knoppix 3.4?

phiny regards :}

Apparently the server in France is not working
Connection refused
Any ideas where to find this distro? All my googling keeps pointing to the France homepage.

i have an eMachine laptop with the mobile amd64 3000+ 1.6Hz processor, ATI radeon9600, 512 MB ram. I can run the knoppix cd only with the nopcmcia flag.
my adapter is listed as Generic cardbus controller under Windows.

If anybody has any ideas how to fix this, i'd appreciate it!

As far as i know, it was a one off release.

Grab Kanotix64 for something very similar, but with current support.

I'll second that. No problems or special codes needed to run off Kanotix64 (2005-01) live CD on an HP a1017c (Athlon 64 3500+, upgraded to 1 GB dual channel RAM).

"Xenoppix-x86_64(Xen3.0.2+KNOPPIX-x86_64-5.0.1) CD size" is released. It exploits latest CPU (Intel Core2 Duo and AMD Athlon64).
http://unit.aist.go.jp/itri/knoppix/xen/index-en.html

Xenoppix-x86_64 boots both X86 and X86_64 linux kernel on HVM of Xen.
Xenoppix-x86_64 looks like KNOPPIX but all packages are replaced for X86_64.
Xenoppix-x86_64 also works as KNOPPIX-x86_64.
Boot loader is GRUB which supports EFI. It enables boot on Intel MAC.
Linux kernel is 2.6.16 for Domain0 of Xen and 2.6.17 for KNOPIX-x86_64.

# Performance of KNOPPIX-x86_64
We compared Pi calculation on KNOPPIX-x86_64 and KNOPPIX32. The software
calculates 3 Million digits of Pi.
