For those who use s3 savage pro km266 video chip here is the driver.
I took it from mandrake 10. I got tired of typing fb cheat at boot prompt so I remastered knoppix with this driver in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/.

I do hope this will help you http://eksanz.tripod.com/LinuxFiles/savage.zip

Thanks. I loaded up Knoppix on a box belonging to a friend of mine with the Savage chip and I had to use fb. Oddly I tried running Mandrake 10 on his box and although X would start KDE would lock up. If I get a chance to work on his machine again I may use this.

You can put the savage driver manually evrytime knoppix is running -well,I believe you know that more than I do-being the moderator/expert here!

If mandy 10 works on other types of dm then it is not a driver issue.

Yes. I just not sure when I'll have access to his box again.

Hi,
first thanks for sending me the drivers.

I copied the savage_drv.o in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/, but when i run the xf86cfg config script, i cannot find the driver for s3 savage KM266, so... what I did wrong, or what I have to do???

Thanks in advance.

Giorgio.

edit your /etc/X11/xf86config-4 like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
# The following line is auto-generated by KNOPPIX mkxf86config
Driver "savage"
VendorName "All"
BoardName "All"
# BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

then restart knoppix. It should be able to automatically detect the driver and display correctly.

hi,
i've encountered issues in using the drivers with colour depth over 24 bit (32 bit mode)

so if I use the savage driver with a 1024x768x32bit KDM won't start.

This is my hardware configuration:

Acer Aspire 1310 Series Laptop
Athlon XP 2400+ Processor
512MB DDR RAM
S3 ProSavage8 KM266 32MB MotherBoard integrated Video Chip
40GB U-ATA100 HD

Maybe it's something wrong in the XF86Config-4 file:
here it is:

this time I don't think I can help you as I don't have the facility to test your config on my desktop pc. Do you really need to go that high(32bit color)?

not really. The problem is that i'm with 24bits depth theorically, but it works like 16bits depth.

I can't understand why...
maybe i've set something in wrong way...

You know that it's hard to see high resolution images and videos with a low color depth.

Thanks for your help.

I agree and it will be worst in laptop screens. Incidentally I am able to go that high in xp even 1280x1024 32bit.(I still cannot get rid of xp unfortunately as the web radio from my home country only works on windows media player. So too is my scanner which is not linux compat.)
