Re-install question

I know this has been covered somewhere else in the forum, but I can't find it!

Question is - When I want/need to re-install Knoppix on my HD, what files/directories do I need to "preserve" so I don't need to start all over.

the foders /etc and /home have most of your settings, mail and the files you created... should be minimum. perhaps the config of your custom kernel (if you have made one).
EDIT /root could be good to keep aswell. /EDIT
