I think nedit and ted would make nice addtions to the knoppix software set, especially for the sub distros specializing in being minimalistic installations.
I am 90% sure both are under either gpl or open source licenses.
Both have very small footprints and are very fast.
Neither depend on gnome or kde
nedit is a very nice, fast and powerful gui programmer's test editor.
ted is a great word processor that has better support for rtf then abiword.....ted can do tables.
