Xandros Open Circulation Edition (http://www.xandros.com/products/home/desktopoc/dsk_oc_intro.html) v2.01 is a (mostly) free Debian-based version of Xandros' easy-to-install, easy-to-use Linux distro.

The catch:
- It requires you to agree to a license that says it's free for non-commercial use only. (And the download's only free using BitTorrent.)

What looks good about it:
- Comprehensive download instructions (http://www.xandros.com/products/home/desktopoc/dsk_oc_download.html) (that could even help with some of the questions frequently asked in this forum). Tells you how to download, check, and burn the CD from within Windows and Linux.
- Comprehensive Getting Started Guide. (http://www.xandros.com/products/home/desktopoc/dsk_oc_gettingstarted.html)
- Installer is able to resize NTFS partitions.
- User interface hides a lot of complexities from the end user (which may or may not be good, depending on your point of view), making this a good candidate for a Linux newbie. (This is especially apparent in the file manager and the package manager.)
- Paid help and free help (through user forums) is available.

(I have no interest, financial or otherwise, in Xandros; it just looks good -- and installing it was a cinch.)
