I just read an entry on slashdot about how Fabian Franz has put together a free version of the NoMachine server. The slashdot description is as follows:

The first day of LinuxTag, Europe's biggest Free Software event (expecting 25,000 visitors) already has one big highlight. It seems that Fabian Franz from the Knoppix Project hacked up a 'FreeNX Server' based on NoMachine's NX technology (poor NoMachine might lose business now). Fabian Franz presented a first preview of the 'GPL Edition' in a live demo together with Kurt Pfeifle. The demo showed sessions going from Germany to Italy just based on a slow WLAN connectivity (shared with hundreds of visitors). A connection lost due to bad network conditions was easily re-connected to, and a deliberately suspended session was revitalized too -- it was just like 'screen' with a GUI! A report on the official LinuxTag webpage says FreeNX will be publically released for the first time as part of the upcoming Knoppix-3.6 release. The Kalyxo project is building and hosting Debian packages of FreeNX and NX/GPL for everyone to use."

I don't really know much about NoMachine. Has anyone here tried it out and if so, what are your impressions? It sounds like this will be a usefull tool as it is supposed to be much faster than vnc.

BTW, isn't the slashdot post is in error when it says that Fabian's FreeNX work will be released on Knoppix 3.6? As I understand it Knoppix 3.5 is being released at Linuxtag so I would think it would be included there. Have any of you who are at Linuxtag gotten a copy of the new release? Thoughts? Impressions?

My WAG is that 3.5 will apply to the DVD, and that 3.6 will be the next CD release, but I have absolutely no facts to support that.

Since it seems to be able to be a client for TerminalServer and Citrix as well it seems pretty nifty

When I saw the NX Client on knoppix 3.4, it got me intriged.

I did try the non gpl version and installed it on an HD knoppix.

On a LAN it is not better than VNC, because VNC is quite reactive already, certainly more a hassle to install, configure users ...

Talking to a server on the internet through an ADSL connection, I would say I feel it as twice as fast as VNC (very subjective). Still it is not as usable for your day to day work as on a LAN.

So I am still wondering where exactly its usefulness is.

Ok I was finally able to get to the Linuxtag site and "read" the information regarding Nomachine.

I'm pasting in the following translation from an online translation site I found. Like all such translations it's far from perfect, but you can get some details that weren't mentioned in the slashdot blub. If any German speaking person want's to make a more readable translation, feel free to do so.

Here's the url: http://www.linuxtag.org/2004/fullnews.do?id=5546c1d1fd52838100fd5296fa2a0053

The translation is as follows:

How Kurt Pfeifle gave confessed and Fabian Franz in the train of its presentation during the Linux day, the coming version is delivered of Knoppix exclusively with a free NX-server-implementation.

While the libraries are accessible the not until recently on per-Linux of introduced NX-server free under the GNUS general Public License (GNU GPL), the business of a characteristic server represents some problems. To introduce reason enough for Kurt Pfeifle and Fabian Franz a free implementation of the server the user shaft. The light of the public will perceive that under the working title »NXFree« introduced solution exclusively in the coming Knoppix-version 3.6. After information of per-Linux, the new distribution should appear presumably end July. Corresponding packages in the Debian-standard are published shortly on that of the Kalyxo-project.

The free NX-server is based completely on the freely available components of the commercial NX-server and was expanded moreover around freely accessible configuration script and management scripts. As a client, the cost-free available, commercial solution of the firm serves further »NoMachine «. A free version is in planning. A Release is planned for this year's summit meeting »aKademy« of the KDE-Community of that 21st until 29 August 2004.

A complete release for other distributions will follow after statements of the involved authors after the Release from Knoppix 3.6. The download-URLS want confessed give Pfeifle and Franz at a later time.

Indeed the article does say that this will be released in Knoppix 3.6 (sometime at the end of July) and that it will be presented at the aKademy conference at the end of August.

Can anyone with the ability to preview the LinuxTag DVD confirm or deny if the freeNX server is on it? The slashdot and KDE articles are a little sparse on details?

I think this and klik / serverside-apt could be killer apps from a network management perspective.

Can anyone with the LinuxTAG cd confirm / deny if the freenx server is included? Waiting with bait on my breath for this one ;)

The way I understood it: The server will be included in the upcoming 3.6 CD download edition. The free server was work in progress at LinuxTag and is not included on the 3.5 LinuxTag DVD.

Is there anything else holding up the release of 3.6 now that LinuxTag is over?

Well, Im running nx server on knoppix 3.3 hd install and its very fast compared to a
windows terminal server. It was easy to install, but I have a font problem so its not
perfect yet. All text show up as boxes and I have not found out how to fix this yet. :(

metavoid, would you consider posting a quick "howto" for this thread? I would be interested in how you configured sources.list and what apt-get commands you ran for installation. Post installation, I would be interested in how you configure the server and start the service to accept connections from remote clients.

This is something that I have been meaning to do on a remaster, and I would LOVE to benefit from anothers experiences.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

I didn't do anything wild.

1) I download the deb files from nomachine.com

2) Installed the clint first (important) with dpkg --install
then the server same way. No errors.

3) then went to nx home folder
cd /usr/NX/bin

4) added a user

nxserver --useradd knoppix

4) started ssh, maybe you should use nxssh

5) Started the server with
nxserver start

6) started the nxclient and it just connected.
There was a font problem. I fixed that by setting all
font to luxi sans inside the client using kcontrol.

Nothing more.

Darn, was hoping you had used the GPL'ed versions available from Kalyxo (http://www.kalyxo.org/debian/) Maybe I'll try the commercial version first since it is an easier install, and I can see what a working system would work like.

Has anyone loaded the GPL'ed version (freenx server)? I know they kludged a system together for LinuxTAG, and I would like to do the same thing.

I'm having that problem too. Does anyone know how to fix it?

In my case the client is running on a Debian system. I grabbed the client from http://debian.tu-bs.de/knoppix/nx/nxclient-1.4.0.tar.gz. The server is Knoppix 3.6 from the CD. If I have the knoppix system be a client for its own server, the problem doesn't appear. Nothing shows up in my ~/.nx/S-Knoppix-1000-3FDD3A283E7600EC3AEFC3F8B1E27113/errors.

UPDATE:

I changed the font to luxi and it was displayed normally.
I simply connected to the server and sat the font inside the session and
all boxes went away.

With Fabian's help, I have put together a klik installation for the FreeNX server and NoMachine NX client (this is a 7.2 MB download).

You can install it from http://klik.berlios.de (direct link: klik://nx if you have the klik client installed). I have tested it with Knoppix 3.3

The klik installation automatically leads you through creating a user and starting the server and client.

Hmm. It doesn't seem to be working for me. Granted I am running an old knoppix install, but most klik apps run without any problem.

I get the following error message when I try to install the NX stuff from Konqueror:

Error starting /home/knoppix/wrapper in order to use nx.

When I try running the wrapper from the command line, I get the following message:

./wrapper: line 23: /home/knoppix/nx/nxstart: No such file or directory

Upon further investigation I see that there is a copy of nxserver.tar.gz inside ~/nx. Something is wrong with this file. If I do, tar zxvf nxserver.tar.gz, I get the following message:

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

It would seem that the, klik script cannot open this file. I have tried installing three or four times now and I always get the same result. Anyone else having a problem like this?

PB, I tested this with Knoppix 3.4v5-17-4 and all is well. However, what I REALLY want is to remaster with this service on version 3.4

Can you tell me what .deb packages you used to get this working? I remastered using the packages on this link

http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12900&highlight=nxserver

and got beau coupe errors when trying to run it (missing config files, can't find dis and dat, etc.)

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

pau1knopp, for this I don't use deb packages at the moment but a patched version. That was neccessary to make it run from the AppDir. I have submitted my patches to fabianx, so perhaps he will integrate them into his version. But for hd installation, the .debs on http://debian.tu-bs.de/ should work. I used these as a starting point for my klik version. Alternatively, you could simply copy the klik-installed directory to your remaster...

I apt-get from here deb http://www.kalyxo.org/debian/ experimental main and it works great.
I only had the chance to try it in xp pro as a client. What I see, the speed is amazing.
I wonder, is it possible to run the client without using any desktop. Is there any thin client live cd that has implement the nxclient protocol.
I checked PilotLinux:
http://www.pilotlinux.nl/pilotlinux/
It's really interesting. But for the time being they not going to implement this protocol, unclear about licenses.

Yes, there is the PXES live CD, it is especially designed as a thin client to run from CD or to be booted over the network. It runs well also on older hardware. http://pxes.sourceforge.net/

I get the same message. Normally I would think that the file got corrupted during the download and I all I would need to do is run the klik script again. But I have done this already 3 -4 times. I just deleted the nx folders and ran the klik script again and the same thing happens. I can't explain what's going on here. It would seem that something is wrong with this file. Nevertheless it seems that the script is working for others. I'm baffeled. Ideas?
