I've heard many instances where that peticular card has run slowly in linux. You may want to try the official drivers from ati, which can be found here (http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/fglrx-4.3.0-3.9.0.i386.rpm)

convert to debian like so:
alien fglrx-4.3.0-3.9.0.i386.rpm
You'll need to be the superuser.

You may also find some usefull information here (http://www.desktop-linux.net/ati.htm)
