I bought the Knoppix CD from our local Australian Linux distributor some months ago and have just now started experimenting with it.

I have reached the stage where i would like to install it as a working distro as opposed to a temporary poor man install.

I keep reading about the method of install which entails the use of the ISO file. What is the file which appears in the Knoppix directory on the CD?... is it the ISO file or do I have to download/buy something else. If it is the ISO file how the devil do I use it? :?:

The ISO file is the one that is downloaded and used to create the CD. The reason it is unfamiliar to you is that you never encountered it, having bought your CD. If you went to the tab at the top of the page that says "Get Knoppix", you would be confronted by a number of mirror sites which you can use to download the ISO file for free. Then you just burn your own disk from it. For example, if you have Nero or EZ CD Creator in Windows, you simply double-click the ISO file, and put blank media in your CD burner. Minutes later, you have a finished CD. It's called an ISO file, because the file extension is .iso. It's not on the CD at all. There may be a way to recreate it, but the easiest thing would be to simply download a fresh copy.

That having been said, if you have a good disk, simply install from it, rather than using an ISO file.

Thank you j.drake. I have searched these forums from A to Z and I cannot find a post which describes how to install from the CD. I have saved and printed a day's work of posts but they all refer to the ISO. I don't have broadband so I am somewhat snookered.

Can you help at all?

According to the WIKI, ( http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/HdInstallHowTo ) you boot the disk, open a shell, and type "sudo knoppix-installer" (although I think it's knx2hd in version 3.4)

That's what you do. :) When you Knoppix from the CD, take a look at /usr/sbin -- you will find that "k2hd" and "knx2hd" are symlinks to "knoppix-installer". They're all the same command.

Thank you gentleman... I'll have a go at that and get back with the results.
