What do I have to do to use internet connection sharing between knoppix 3.4 and windows xp?

this pc a speedtouch usb connection that's working running on knoppix 3.4 (hdd installed)
and my other pc has windows xp installed on it.

How do I get the internet connection sharing and file sharing working?

The easiest way to do this is to start the Knoppix Terminalserver from the Knoppix menu. This automatically provides a DHCP server and Internet access for your clients.

If you want to do it manually, have a look at

A graphical setup tool is available at

That's a pretty good idea. I hadn't thought about using the Knoppix Terminal server as a quick way to set up dhcp and internet connection sharing to windows machines.

another easy way for me is to install Guidedog, it run as a daemon.
But you need to set your i.p address which act as gateway for your xp.

File sharing is done between Linux & windows boxes via Samba (http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/FaqSambaQuick).
That doc is aimed at live cd use but it's not too much different from hdd install.

It is alot easier (I think) to simply install Cygwin on your winbox and start the ssh server. Then just use ssh to access your windows box.

Google for samba and swat.

I use Knoppix now.

People, why we are f***ing up with those iptable and ipchains ???

The best things to do here, is to include some user-friendly, GUI tool with Knoppix.

I think Mandrake's DrakGW Internet Connection Sharing Wizard will be best candidate for most users...

what do you say ?
Can we include it in the next Knoppix CD ?

The upcoming Knoppix 3.7 will contain a GUI to set up Internet routing along with a firewall.

Hmm. This is interesting. Work is already being done on 3.7? Any further info Probono?

You can already get 3.7 in Germany, as part of the PC-Welt magazine. See http://www.pcwelt.de/cgi-bin/vorschaltseite/heft.mpl they say
"World Exclusive: KNOPPIX 3.7 Professional Edition"

Unfortunately it won't be for download until the PC-Welt magazine is expired. Seems it was an exclusive deal with Klaus Knopper.
