knoppix v3.4 5-17 2004

i posted all ready in the loung and was refered to this catagory
I had had issues with the nvidia driver
instead of load glx (lowercase)
i stumbledd on the fix
load GLX (upercase)

but still doesnt detect my specific 5700LE card im using generic driver
any help here (ps im useing the latest version of nvidia from site under 2.6.6 kernel)
for those of you that get it installed and still have isssues configing (if you need wimpy gui like me use kxconfig command gives you graphic front end for configuring)

next on usb drives it only seems to pick them up 1/3 of the time i plug it in and wait 1-2 min then try again and again till it works some times only reboot fixes any suggestions

the issue with sound notifications for users not working was fixed by someone telling me to use aplay or artsplay as external player

(im listing fixes as well as curent remaining probs in case helps someone else)

next icons

under kcontrol i told it to animate all icons and it does nothing

if my memory serves me on my old mandrake install mouse in hover mode activated animations

how do i enable it here..

next

two ide accelerator cards

during boot process shows all drives

but system
hwinfo qtparted etc only show drives off of one card

my other problem with cdrom drives as scssi and not working properly was fixed by using synaptic and looking under mount (name & description ) and cant tell you witch program actually fixed it but now works properly hope this steers someone in the right direction

next (as if i havnt gripped enough)

is there a way to allow the system to integrate rpm's without using alien -d ?? would be alot simpler if i could

linux == a rose

for such a beautiful thing it sometimes has some really painfull thorns

forgot to mention during boot both monitors work but upon launch of kdm

say goodby to monitor 2

??????? im assuming not picking it up because im using vanilla nvidia instead of 5700LE

Hi Voldemort,

That's a list of grief!

Let's start with the monitors. In your /etc/X11 folder there's a file calle XF86Config-4. Can you cut and paste the sections that start with these;

Section "Module"

Section "Monitor"

Section "Device"

In the last one, make sure you get the Driver line.

Post these and I'll have a look and we'll get the Twinview working. OK?

Jim

Voldemort
I doubt your nvidia and glx is running. Try this command on Konsole:
glxgears
to test your glx.

Sorry, i might be wrong.Just curious about caps GLX.

not at home right now or id post my XF86Config-4 but as far as the gears goes allready ran that test

dont ask me about the cap letters issue its what made it happy so im NOT going to argue with it

but thanks for the replies I'll get that file posted as soon as i get home

Look again at your: Section "Module"
You have two section on glx
1) Load "glx"
2) Load "GLX"

This are the problem which cause the problem, I believe last time you had two Load "glx" with small caps and you cannot start x. Then you change one to "GLX", and you can start x.

Actually the system just ignore the "GLX" because it is not recognized.

You can safely remove the Load "GLX".

Everything else is fine.

Hope this will end the confusion.

About using two or more monitor, I cannot help you much since I only use one monitor. I will definitely use two monitor in few days. There's an article and example how it was done on Mandrake, I believe not much of a difference. The url is:

Voldemort,
here's a copy of the start of your Section "Monitor"

# Auto-generated by KNOPPIX mkxf86config

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
Option "DPMS" "true"
VendorName "DEC"
ModelName "DEC06da"
HorizSync 30-86# DDC-probed
VertRefresh 50-130# DDC-probed

To get Twinview (two screens under nvidia driver) working here's a copy of the same portion of mine;

# Auto-generated by KNOPPIX mkxf86config

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
Option "DPMS" "true"
VendorName "VSC"
ModelName "VSC4f4d"
HorizSync 30 - 97 # DDC-probed
VertRefresh 50 - 180 # DDC-probed
Option "Twinview"
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-97"
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "50-160"
Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024,1280x1024"

Voldemort, take careful note of the following. In mine, the only thing added to get mine working is ;
Option "Twinview"
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-97"
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "50-160"
Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024,1280x1024"

No other changes are required to XF86Config-4. Be careful that the vertical refresh rates for your screens are roughly the same according to the manufacturers spec. If they are really different you might have problems. You will have to change the refresh rates to match those of your second screen and the 'MetaModes' line to the resolution you want. OK?

Let me know if this works.

Jim

placed the twinview the exact same way you showed me and no go

im wondering if its because im going off of one video card instead of two

Nvidia 5700LE has two ports....

windows like the dual config but not kdm apparently...

oh yeah and its not different monitors screwing it up they are identical models

the only thing i change from what you showed me was the refresh rates (to match my monitors) and the resolutions

i run at 1600x1200

thanks though

Man after 3 weeks I found this post, All it took was the four lines of code above to get my monitors working and they work perfectly. Just had to change the refresh rates.
