If you can't find it in the menus try with typing lyx in a konsole.

That's strange. Are you sure it's installed:
markus@mrk-fujibox:~$ dpkg -l|grep lyx
ii lyx 1.3.4-1 High Level Word Processor
ii lyx-common 1.3.4-1 High Level Word Processor - common files
ii lyx-qt 1.3.4-1 High Level Word Processor - Qt frontend
Try the command lyx-qt
If it's not in the menus you could try updating them with update-menus as user.

I've tried that and other combinations to fire it up - no joy
I use Lyx on windoze so I thought it would be a good starting point on Knoppix - something i'm familiar with.
Delved a little deeper:
Any way - all appears loaded other than what you would call "lyx.exe" on windows.
Plus there is no Latex support anyway
So all in all it's space wasted on the CD IMHO
Great pity because it's the latest version of Lyx - someone has obviously gone to some trouble with a compile - but sadly not far enough.
Not sure where that leaves me - at the moment, back with Windoze I suppose

running grep
ii lyx-common 1.3.4-1 High Level Word Processor - common files

Sorry, not a clue as to why the frontend is missing. Perhaps kghostview somehow uses it.

As root,
apt-get install lyx-qt
apt-get install lyx
then as yourself,
lyx-qt
This is the usual way to install software which you don't yet have :)

I get this
root@ttyp0[knoppix]# apt-get install lyx-qt
W: Not using locking for read lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
E: THe package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened
and the same for
apt-get install lyx

Hi again,
Apt only works on a hd install and I sort of got the impression you were running Knoppix from the cd?
The only way to install apps on the cd is AFAIK klik (http://klik.berlios.de) but I didn't see lyx there.

Cheers Markus;
You are correct -I am running from the cd.
I must admit to very little Linux knowledge so I am just following suggestion as they are posted.
All in all though the Knoppix cd has given me a good insight into a world other than windoze - for which i'm very happy.
Over the past year or so I've been slowly adapting myself to use Linux software available as a Windoze app. Lyx, Firefox etc. I finish my PhD soon and will then ditch windows for good. Every thing I need + appears available to the linux community.
I'll then consider the Knoppix HD install as a Linux option.

If you want lyx you could try kanotix (http://kanotix.com) which is another live cd. From knoppix 3.4 latex and it seems lyx were removed for space reasons.

Hi, I would like to make LyX available through klik, but unfortunately it depends on a lot of other packages so that a) the download would be _very_ big and b) the creation of a klik recipe seems to be very complicated. For now, I recommend using Knoppix 3.3 or Kanotix if you need LyX.
