Why my USB (Handy) Drive is not working?

I have 128MB Kingston USB drive, when I plug into my Knoppix booted P4 Dell, Machine, Knoppix does not recognise it. I also did dmesg in Konsole (Terminal) Window as I read in "Docs" Link of this site. Please let me know what is the problem?

Did you do a mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/sda1, where sda1 is a directory you created?

For debugging USB devices, you can run a utility called usbview. It requires that you add the following line in /etc/fstab:
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0

I have a new USB 128 MB Transcend stick (formatted on 98SE) andif I try to mount it withmount a -t msdos /dev/sda (or sda1) /mnt/flash it ges an error "/dev/sda not a valid block drive" . I am using 2.4 kernal (latest download). Please help.

Witch Kernel are you using, because
Kernel 2.4.27 recognise it and
Kernel 2.6.7 recognise the USB stick not.

I have a Jetflash 128 MB brand new Stick for USB 2.0 and it is working fine on Windows. Also /utilitis/tools/usb view recognises it as

The question seems to be what /dev/xxx entry corresponds to this Flash Rom. I am logging in as Root shell so I don't think it is an issue of permissions.

I need the correct value of this XXX. Any ideas.

I have sequentially tried scd0, sr0, sda, sdb, sg0. The last 3 give the same messgae "not a block device" The first two point to the CD !!!

the comand
dmesg|grep *
(where * is replaced with sd, scsi or sg) might answer your question.

I have a Transcend Jetflash2 128MB device.

It was recognised, straight out of the box by Knoppix 3.4, running either Kernel 2.4 or Kernel 2.6. I did not have to give any conmmands at all. It just worked.

I use it to transfer files from a Windows NT machine (which does not recognise USB) to a Windows 98 (First Edition) machine (which is unreliable!).

I was really pleased when Knoppix recognised it without me having to do anything!

Note: the Jetflash is formatted as FAT16 out of the box. Not sure if formatting it with Windows 98SE might be changing this and causing problems.

I have managed to mount the USB Stick in the experimental Kernal Linux26. I had to RecoverDisk by the JetFlash utility and then format is as Fat32 under Windows. Then only it is mountable as 'mount -a -t msdos /dev/sda /mnt/usb'.

Now the problem is that this can be doneonly as a root. But the Knoppix user KDE doesn't allow me to open the folder /mnt/usb !!! I tried changing modes a+rwx of /mnt/usb, still that doesn't work. And it doesn't allow me to mount it as Knoppix user !

The solution seems to be to have the KDE desktop environment as a 'root'. How to do it?

Secondly the combination of linux26 /knoppix26 and fb1024x768 doesn't work !

Will appreciate anyone's help. Want to thank the earlier 'helpes' for their help.

If you formatted it as Fat32 shouldn't the format type be vfat? The best way to make the user able to mount it is to edit your fstab. Create an entry for your usb drive and put 'users' in the options like below.


/dev/sda /mnt/usb vfat noauto, users, exec 0 0

If you want it to mount everytime you boot up you can change noauto to auto.

Someone referred to a doc with this information, where can I find that, and what are the first steps I can take to recognizing the drive?
