So, I saw this on the bit_torrent page and was wondering if it is for real? It is not mentioned anywhere?

Anyone know anything about it before I try booting my laptop with it?

Downloaded it last night, and I have booted it on two computers.

Seems fine. :)

OOPS! How did we miss a release from 2004.0816???

Anyway, I'm having a heck of a time getting this release. I tried bittorrent, but it takes for ever to start! How long does it take to queue up?

I tried the ftp sites, but only

ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/

has the new ISO and it's really slow!!!

OK, am I doing something wrong? I went to the BitTracker page on www.knoppix.net and clicked DL. Now on my home dir I have KNOPPIX...EN.torrent so I ran

btlaunchmany *.torrent

in a shell and all I get is hundred's of lines like

All: Spd: 0 B/0 B Tot: 0.0 MB/0.0 MB

All: Spd: 0 B/0 B Tot: 0.0 MB/0.0 MB

All: Spd: 0 B/0 B Tot: 0.0 MB/0.0 MB

All: Spd: 0 B/0 B Tot: 0.0 MB/0.0 MB

Is this normal???

You might try a regular download from Tuwien http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/knoppix/

You might try a regular download from Tuwien http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/knoppix/

This site doesn't have 3.6 either!

OK, I've left btlaunchmany running for nearly 2 hours now and I still get the same outputs. Am I in fact on a queue or not. If I'm not, I don't see the point of leaving this running....

What in Gehenna is Bit Torrent? Does Knoppix work well? I have been trying to find a good linux distribution so I can pickup Unix again.

Knoppix is great. It can be as dangerously powerful as a Porsche 911 with a bolt-on blower or as frustratingly safe as a Civic Hybrid with a bolt-on throttle governor. Thing is, YOU get to decide :D

BitTorrent is a file sharing utility that works like a pyramid scheme is purported to work. You download from other people while, at the same time, other people download from you. In theory, you reap faster download times due to the efficiency of the distributed system, especially when a file is brand-new and very popular. In practice, I haven't seen any advantage. Even downloading 3.6 from an FTP mirror, I had it in an hour and a half over home DSL. Some torrents have taken closer to four hours. To be fair, though, I haven't really tried it enough for it to be representative. In my case yesterday, I could swallow as fast as my DSL could eat anyway, so there's no advantage there.

Well, my bittorrent was not working at all. So I used that ftp site I listed above. It must have taken 20 hours!

To be honest, however, my WIMxP users did interrupt the download several times and the download was easily resumed from whereever it left off each time.

I never had to wait SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO long for a new ISO in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!
