x-server not starting

hi there, i have completed my installation of knoppix onto the hdd. and when booted thru hdd, it reaches the terminal prompt login. after logging in as root i tried to start the x server thru startx command but its not working. It gives me some error regarding fonts and waiting for x server to shutdown.
Can you help get me the gui configured.
