Ok, so after a couple of days running knoppix 3.4 off CD and not being able to get a satisfactory poormans hdd install setup, I bit the bullet and typed knoppix-installer.

My HDD was partioned thus,

4GB C:
18GB D:
5GB E:

I deleted the 5GB E: partion for the linux install.

Eveything works but I have a problem. My lilo boot screen offers me,

Linux
Linux 2.4
Linux 2.6
WinXP hda1
WinXP hda2

Booting into Linux I see all "drives" and the data on them.

Booting into WinXP hda1 I get Winxp up but only see the 4GB C: drive in the OS. Under disk management it is there but "unknown".

Booting WinXP hda2 I get missing NTLDR error.

Can anyone please give me idiot proof instructions on how to get my 18GB partition, and its data, visible in XP again please?

Or am I screwed?

Anyone know what went wrong?

Cheers.

This problem usually occur when you install knoppix on extended partition of dos/xp. Information of that partition somehow has been overwritten by linux thus xp won't recognize.Next time when you want to install linux, don't use extended partition.

Try boot with your xp cd , choose recovery console, when asked for admin password just hit enter.
In command prompt, run: fixmbr
Reboot your system by typing : exit
Lilo will dissapear and you can't boot knoppix. Delete that 5g partition and recreate fat32 partition using fdisk. You wiil loose your knoppix.
Reboot and Boot into xp, your 18g partition will show up.
