I was reading the latest edition of Distrowatch and I saw that Knoppix 3.7 has been released. Unfortunately it has not yet been released to the net yet. If you are in Germany, you can get it in the latest issue of PC-Welt magazine. Unless someone grabs this and puts it up on bittorrent, the rest of us will be waiting for a while. As previously reported by Probono, the 3.7 release will include "a configurable "Firewall on CD" (including masquerading and proxy features)"

Read Distrowatch here: http://66.111.55.60/weekly.php?issue=20040913#1

The official announcement is at knoppix.com

Hello mod, folks

I actually got me this 3.7 - first I was sceptical, because these german mags are really competitive, and you never know what they are up too.

Unfortunately, I don't have Bit-t. installed so you have to wait.

All I can say for now. This edition is the first of all knoppixes that runs from scratch with 2.6 kernel on my laptop, because the strg+alt+minus/plus keys work here for the first time.

This month there's also the 10th-ann-issue of german "Linux-Mag" /w a Knoppix-DVD (incl. 8 diff. Knoppix-versions!) and there is a mag called "PC-Direct" that has the 'linuxtag-Knoppix-DVD-Version 3.5'

A lots of Knoppix for September, eh?

Before I invest the time and bandwidth, does anyone know if the 3.4 and 3.6 buglists have been resolved in the new version?

If anyone can guide me through the process of creating an iso image of the cd and creating a *.torrent, I'd go to the nearest gas-station to buy a copy of that (IMHO really crappy and too windows centric) "PC-Welt" magazine, I have to buy cigarettes anyways.
It's 9:30 pm here in Germany and I got to work tomorrow, but I'd leave the puter on all night for seeding via a 192kbps adsl uplink.

Update: it's 00:02 am now and I've finally figured out how to set up a bt tracker, yay! Torrent available at: http://www.osnanet.de/dlubatz/knoppix_3.7_PC-Welt.iso.torrent

Note: I'll try to keep this tracker online as long as possible, but my ISP will change my IP adress in 24 hours, so that'll be the end of sharing then:-( UPDATE: I will take the tracker down at 22:15 pm (CET), the 15th of september; fearing the electricity bill + dynamic IP will change soon, you know;)

There is an changinglog for 3.7? Is it originally in german? Does it use kernel 2.6.8?

Thanks!

Theres no official changelog so far, but it might be on the CD itself. The magazine tells me that theres a new feature called "NAT-Router-on-CD" or so.
Yes, it uses kernel 2.6.7 and its in german but "lang=us" works as usual.

Could a moderator or someone similar post an md5sum of the original image, excuse my paranoia!

Actually anyone posting a file-size and md5sum would be a good start :-)

I am calculating the md5sum as I type.. ah, there it is: 057bb916206fcc3359a3cb0f674b0448 But that won't do anything about your paranoia I guess;-) I booted that knoppix 3.7 CD with the "testcd" cheatcode before I created an iso image off of it! Didn't post an md5sum yet because bittorrent handles integrity checking on its own.
The filesize is, as always, as large as one standard cdr: 700 MB;-)

The more immediate problem seems to be the tracker (supposedly at http://212.95.104.159:6969/announce) is already inaccessible...
I'd be willing to provide the initial seed for several days (well, at 30KB upload only, but it's something); alas, I don't have the file... :(
Ah well, guess we'll have to wait for the next public release then

i personally doubt 3.7 will be released anywhere else (like 3.5).

i have the .torrent above and was able to get the .iso in time.

if you would like to setup a tracker i will be more than happy to seed it provided you can leave the tracker up. i think my dhcp lease from SBC expires every 10 minutes otherwise i'd have one up here myself.

that's why i said "personally" ... as in it's just my opinion.

to me it just makes sense that a promotional edition the magazine may have paid for distribution rights to wouldn't be available through the standard channels. (just like the special linuxtag 3.5 dvd edition wasn't.) not to mention that the main Knoppix page (http://knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html) announcing 3.7 as "Exclusive KNOPPIX Version 3.7 in PC-Welt magazine" makes the official position fairly plain.

Of course knoppix is GPL. But GPL says nothing on wich way you distribute the source code. A lot of commercial distribution don't offer the iso files for free downloading.
Additional Klaus Knopper needs also money to keep the project running, so I think he uses these exclusive publishings for fund raising. But at the end, we will get again a fine 3.8 version.
I didn't know exactly about the 3.7, but I know, that he put some software in 3.5 on demand of the publischer (c't computer mag. ). So he put additional gnome into 3.5 for example, but for his normal distributions he take only a single GUI and concentrate on tools for programming and network analysis.

rjryn2

I never thought about it that way.

So your saying that 3.7 wont have programing tools? Thats why i love knoppix so much. Unlike other live cds knoppix is the only one that has programing utilities like gcc/g++ for programers like me. I needed something that alowed me to program on the go. Ive tryed mandrake move 2 but mandrake move doesnt have gcc or any networking tools, its useless.

enzo.c
09-17-2004, 12:47 AM
So your saying that 3.7 wont have programing tools?
No -- first of all I don't know, what they changed for the 3.7 exclusive, beside they put some firewall stuff on the cd. I didn't know, which firewall stuff -- the PC-Welt mag says only some maketing garbage. Second: Of course their was gcc on 3.5. As you say a Linux/Unix without gcc is useless. But not many additonal tools (as ddd for example). And so their will be gcc also on 3.7.

edit: And you can be sure that their will be a lot of programming tools on the next regulare 3.8 Knoppix, because Klaus Knopper said during a chat on the question, why he didn't include Gnome into the normal editions, that it is important for him to include a lot of programming stuff. So it depends on the demands of PC-Welt, how many programming stuff is included.

sorry for my bad english

You can find a official statement from Klaus Knopper on:
http://www.linuxforen.de/forums/showthread.php?t=149964&page=1&pp=15

I think most of you don't understand German, so I try a translation:

In this case the release (by the way exactly as for the c't special editions) is a "real" Knoppix, which (similar as for the LinuxTag-DVD-Edition 3.5 for the Linux Day 2004) is exclusive produced for PC-Welt along strict guidelines. The release is based on the public version 3.6, but has some new features, which are supposed to betray in the magazine, so I don't want to write alot about it ;-)

So I think it will use the same Kernels as 3.6 ... but for more information you have to try it.

i'll leave it running but capped @ 10KB/s since i'm using eMule to share it (ed2k://|file|knoppix_3.7_PC-Welt.iso|732585984|C49CF894631E591316B258756F513F0 3|/) on the other 30KB/s that i've got... and people there seem to be interested. if nothing's happening by the weekend i'll quit seeding the torrent.

call me a n00b, but since your link opens as a text file, does that mean I can edit the iso in a text editor and change the keyboard layout that way? I'm worried doing that will corrupt the .iso file.

bfree
09-19-2004, 04:34 PM
MaldiGola, you can indeed edit the iso in a text editor, but make certain you don't change the size of any files (use overwrite and not insert mode), probably easier to just use sed or something similar to replace lang=de with lang=ie (or whatever you want). It's easier to extract the iso, edit the boot/isolinux folder (change the language and add/edit any other boot options you want), regenerate the MD5Sums file (optional but testcd won't work without it) and then remake the iso (using the full mkisofs command from the Remastering guide to ensure it is bootable).

Can someone plz briefly post the significant changes since the 3.6 (new packages, services, significant updates, etc), since the changelog was not posted on the web, and the analyzing met in the previous replies doesn't reflect all the points. If there are already any opinions formed please post them too - so the forum surfers like me who still hasn't get the new version will know is it worthy to. (Though I know it is ;))

well since the magazine isnt sold in certain countries thats the only way some people can get it. I dont feel that its hurting thing for people to download it if theres no way in the world they could get it, even if they did have the money, not unless they want to fly all the way over to another country to get a freakin magazine lol. So yeah, if you got money and the magazine is being sold there, support knoppix and buy the magazine , if not theres no other choice but to download it if you want it bad enough.

You can have a look at http://livelinux.antesis.org/knoppix/ for 3.7 - I just found it there.

Hi!

I just downloaded knoppix 3.7 iso, tried the installation from HDD(poorman's),I typed:
-------------------------------------------
loadlin.exe linux26 root=/dev/hda1 initrd=minirt26.gz lang=en fromhd=/dev/hda1
------------------------------------------
it started quickly ,but stalled at Kernel panic...it just got hang up there...........
Does that imply the inside "minirt26.gz" is in bugs??????

later I typed:
-------------------------------------------
loadlin.exe linux24 root=/dev/hda1 initrd=minirt24.gz lang=en fromhd=/dev/hda1
------------------------------------------
it run smoothly into KDE , but that's in kernel 2.4.27.

In fact I'd like to try knoppix3.7 running in Kernel2.6.7......

How shoul I enter kernel 2.6.7? by which cheatcodes?
Do hope you help indeed!

a bien tot!

Hey everyone. I have a dedicated Tracker (I Promise this thing will be here for over a year.) I'm gonna try downloading the iso and hosting it...May take some time. If you have the ISO please announce it at http://www.ericville.com/ztorrentz/tracker/announce.php No Login Required. Just announce and post the link here. If not...I should have it up within 24 hours. -Eric

I do not think the vendors listed on that page have 3.7. If they did then "Exclusive KNOPPIX Version 3.7 in PC-Welt magazine" woudn't be accurate.

I have been to the mirrors and can only find 3.6.

Hello....I successfully downloaded the Knoppix pc-welt version and ran it. It seems to be very good. I am debating whether or not to do an install. What hard drive installer should be used? I realize this version is still new and there may not be an installer yet. Will knx2hd work? bob :P

Well I used the knoppix-installer version which autograbs the newest version (recommended beginner type install) and it seemed to work just fine. Can't get the command here but type "sudo knoppix-installer" and hit tab a couple of times and you'll find it! And of course I don't have the machine here to check the exact version it grabbed in case it matters!

does it come with 2.6.9 kernel??

I doubt it would include 2.6.9, because 2.6.9 hasn't been released yet. Wait long enough, then yes. But I wouldn't look for 2.6.9 any time soon.
Given the numbering scheme now my guess is the next Knoppix version will be 3.8...

Yes, I've used Nero only a few times but didn't like it. K3B is the go. But if you don't have a linux system or knoppix cd yet, I guess thats like the chicken and the egg.

I'm looking for english version. I was download german version. I really don't understand a word. Did anyone know how to change to english language?...

At the first boot screen press F2 or F3 for boot options, this is in english.

Then type: knoppix lang)us

capital number 0 is "=" on the German keyboard. This will show up as "knoppix lang=us"

press enter

Then you will be right, after that point the english keyboard will be used and all the menus etc will be in english. Also if you have a home directory saved to the hard drive you will need to know that / is & (capital seven) eg

knoppix home)&dev&hda5 for "knoppix home=/dev/hda5"

or where you chose to create a home directory.

You can have multiple boot options, I usually have

"knoppix26 knoppix lang)us knoppix home)&dev&hda5"

Have fun.

David.

I still remember the time with 3.4 , since the magazine version to official release ...

Hey :)
(Though I know it is ;))
Thanks ahead! :)

P.S
I use knoppix to bring a new audience to the open source community, and sure knoppix is the BEST distro for this purpose!

I seem to be using KNOPPIX to learn Debian!
Accordingly, 3.7 seems to be some sort of a high
stability release: Almost all of the differing
packages are OLDER than those of 3.6.
Using "dpkg -l" (like "rpm -qa", to us RedHat types):

I've downloaded Knoppix 3.7.
It's pretty cool, except, when typing lang=us, to get = you press [Shift]+0.
The firewall has some pretty good features including routing and HTTP cache/proxy.

EDIT: If the tracker/torren was up, I would seed it.

I found this link to the Knoppix 3.7 iso
http://69.57.139.67/~hugh/linux-mirrors/knoppix/
The md5sum stated in the knoppix_3.7_PC-Welt.iso.md5sum file, in the same directory, is equal to the one in the above posts, but I'll be calculating and confirming it once I've got the iso down
[...]
it checks out!

ATTENTION
Due to the, ahem, downess of the earlier mentioned tracker, I have setup my own tracker using Azureus (http://azureus.sf.net).
If you have a completed download, simply rename the downloaded file to "knoppix_v37.iso" and download the torrent from http://220.233.70.182:6969.
I suspect you know the standard seeding procedure from there.
There is currenly one seed (me).
We need more.
Please aid in the distribution of this product.
We can start our own little BitTorrent ring.
If you have any feedback, please reply.

I've heard some not-so-nice things already about 3.7.... Is it worth a download, if I'm already running 3.6?

I presume the only advantages could be some better scripts and configuration tools, because as HDD installation apt can make you the most recent system anyway....

I've installed 3.7 and went back to 3.6 The new version wouldn;t work half the time. Sometimes it would boot and locate my usb mouse no problem, other times it couldnt find it. Sometimes it would boot and my screen would get a ton of weird vertical lines, then my bootloader I made on a floppy started acting up like it wdasnt even there. I actually tried booting using anoher bootable CD in which I specified the path to where my knoppix was, in this instnce it started to load kernel 2.6.7 and went to German, even though my install was from the en version. All in all just a rather buggy disto in my opion so I switched back to 3.6 for now. Hopefully the newer version will become more stable

Hi,

I have just heard that Knoppix 3.8 will soon be released. Is is true??

This is a topic about people downloading 3.7 as it came in a magazine a few months before 3.7 on the net, oddly enough It'd be smarter to have made a new topic ;)

I've only seen mention of it in a comment on slashdot http://linux.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=141120&cid=11822804 Where did you see mention of it?

I'm guessing you're wanting to download knoppix but are afraid of a newer version coming out the next day? For doing whatever you need knoppix for, 3.7 should be good enough, but if you just want a copy for incase I think the best idea is to wait for a new version to come out, then get it then :)

This thread is long and extremely out of date, since Knoppix 3.7 has been out for some time. For those interested in 3.8 I would suggest starting another thread (in the lounge, not here until it is real news). Here's the latest on 3.8 from Today's Slashdot (http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/03/01/2329225&tid=190&tid=90&tid=106). I'm putting this thread to rest now.
