I made some changes to login manager now when I log into my acct it loops back to the login screen. Please help me log back in.
You could try uninstall kdm and reinstall it again or you could upgrade kdm. It happened to me :D after a power blackout.
I upgraded my kde to 3.3 and my kdm doesn't work as expected. Users image is missing, list hundred of "users" and I cannot restore it from kde control center. I don't put much effort to solve this.
Got fedup and dump my kdm.
Now I'm using gdm. I think gdm is coooool.
:D

So apt-get update what ......? or How?
Since you can log into root,my advice is login as root and try to revert to previous state. If this doesn't work, apt-get -t testing install kdm or run synaptic or kpackage and look for newer version of kdm.
If that doesn't work and you would like to try GDM, then
apt-get install gdm.
choose to use gdm as default windows manager.
or run dpkg-reconfigure gdm
There will be gdm utilities menus created, so you can set your gdm the way you like.
You might want to remove kdm afterwards: update-rc.d -f kdm remove

Added gdm and used it but still cannot get into user account. Just loops back to the login screen. Made all necessary changes to login manager(set back to defaults) and rebooted and still no luck.
Might give you some idea:

Or you could try this:

This is for KDM, you can change back to KDM by running dpkg --configure kdm.
