copying Knoppix

I have today bought my copy of Knoppix. I booted it up and this is like another world. I have used Windows for 15 years and today is like a rebirth!! Wonderful... Not wanting to ruin my CD I set about burning another copy but it won't boot up from my copy.

Can you not make a copy? :roll: :cry: :lol: :mrgreen:

Of course you can; there's no copy protection whatsoever. What have you been trying? You need to do a "physical" copy since merely copying the visible files to a new compilation type project wouldn't copy the bootable part of the el-torito CD. Let use know which burning SW you are using , and someone will provide more specific instructions.

Hmmmmmmm,

Most people just download the image file from a mirror site, and then burn the ISO image file to a new CD-ROM -=- Never heard of "duplicating" the cd in the first place....

It shouldn't have any "protection" as far as copying, legal or programmatic, because of the GNU licensing... Only thing I can think of, is, make sure your "burning software" is "cloning", or "duplicating" the CD, not copy, duplicate - the files are not Windows / DOS files, and can not be placed on a drive and then "copied" to a CD, you should use a "clone" setting of some kind...

If a duplicated CD of Knoppix doesn't boot, but the "original" does, something wasn't copied from the original to the target, as it should have been. Try checking around in your burning software, and see if you can clone, or, sometimes the program will word it like: "make an exact copy of a disc"...

Not sure about this one, but, its a thought... Not sure if you are using Windows to burn a CD, and the burning software has a option to "make this CD bootable", will it use the "running" OS to make that CD bootable with??? i.e. burn a CD in Windows, that is not a Windows OS CD boot, but, will get Windows OS boot files with the "make CD bootable" option -=- -=- I never duplicated bootable CD-ROMs, like Windows, or even Knoppix... ( I always used the downloadable ISO image file to make Knoppix CD-ROMs )

I went into Windows and copied the original Knoppix into the c drive the I used Nero Express to burn a CD. I have a choice of burning the data or a bootable disk. I chose the data because this was the original that I thought I had to copy in its entirety as it was working.

Do not create a project, either data or music, you should have a option, in the menus, that allows you to "duplicate a CD"... It will only ask you where is the "source" disc, and the "target" disc - this type of setting / option will do a "direct" copy of the structure on the "source" disc, and duplicate it "exactly" on the target disc... As for the copied files on your C drive, you should just delete them, they are not going to work, and you might as well not waste your hard drive space for files that aren't needed...

IF you want to run from the hd and 'save' running or possibly damaging cd while inserting, you can at boot time type the following:

boot: knoppix26 tohd=/dev/hdaX

where X is the partition you want the 'mirrored' cdrom to be copied to. Then next time when booting up, just

boot: knoppix26 fromhd=scan

to access the 'cdrom mirrored' on the hd. That is what I am utilizing now.

Advantages? It boots somewhat faster and does multitasking better as the hd is much faster than a cdrom!!

Also called 'the poor man's install'!! er, or is that the layz man's install?? The cdrom must be in the machine for a few seconds till it switches to the hd 'image' of the cdrom. Wastes hd space, but much more functional system as to multitasking ability than straight off the cd IMHO. Also, at power down, it doesn't eject, but just lays in the cdrom and waits for next bootup/powerup!

This 'frees up' the cdrom about 1 second after you hit enter after the last boot option is entered for those with a single cd/rw device for like playing music or copying files, etc.

I have two cdrom devices. And copying from one to the rw device is easy with K3b. Just click on the device with knoppix cdrom in it and say/click yes/ok/whatever to 'burn iso image' .... something like that and it dupes the knoppix cdrom!!

One downside I found. It 'hogs' or mounts read only the hd that the 'mirrored' cd is in, but that isn't a problem for me as I had known about that previously and had a 2 gig partition ready for it to reside in and don't even go there except for it to work from. Could be an 800mb partition I guess, but hey plenty of space on this hd.
