I have a Samsung SyncMaster 17" LCD and an ATI Radeon 7000, and when I try to boot Knoppix, the monitor displays "Video Mode not Supported".

I have tried knoppix xmodule=vesa, but am a total noob and don't know what to do.

I know that Knoppix is running, asit responds to keyboard commands and the video comes back when it initiates the shutdown procedure.

Any suggestions? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I figured you could use the monitor information. Samsung's site says: The Samsung SyncMaster 173s is a 17-inch TFT-LCD monitor delivering a 450:1 contrast ratio, 0.264mm pixel pitch, 1280 x 1024 maximum resolution, scanning frequency of 30-81 kHz horizontal and 56-75 Hz vertical, and horizontal/vertical viewing angle of 150/120.

Have you tried setting the refresh rates ?

screen=1280x1024
Use specified Screen resolution for X

xvrefresh=60 or vsync=60
Use 60 Hz vertical refresh rate for X

xhrefresh=80 or hsync=80
Use 80 kHz horizontal refresh rate for X

like
knoppix screen=1280x1024 vsync=60 hsync=80

That should boot you.

Thanks. That worked Prefectly. The only problem now is getting the resolution in KDE to 120x1024. As of now, it only boots in 800x600. I tried using "Resize and Rotate", but 800x600 was the only option in the dropdown menu, and I don't know where to go from there.

Thats odd. You are booting from cd right?

Even that you use screen=1280x1024 it still
boots in 800x600?

Im sorry. Im cluless of what "Resize and Rotate" is.
Guss it something your found in Kde Control Center?

Anyway, we will need to check your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
to see if it thinks that other res are available.

sudo kwrite /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

In section "Screen"
Notice the "DefaultColorDepth" value. (maybe 16)
find the Subsection "Display" having this "Depth"
In this Subsection, does it list higher than 800x600 ?
like "1024x768"

Could you post your XF86Config-4 if the above makes no sense to you.

also type mkxf86config and tell me what it says.

Resize and Rotate is a KDE resolution and multi-monitor app. I am booting from CD.

kxf32 config says:
Video is ATI | Radeon QY, using XFree86 (vesa) Server
Minitor is SAM00a3, H:30-81kHz, V:56-75Hz
Trying specified vrefresh rate of 60Hz
Using Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

MY XF86Config Says:

Hmm. it seems pretty fine.
Maybe DDC is guessing wrong.

try
knoppix screen=1280x1024 vsync=72 hsync=80

to stop the flickering.

Im siting on a cellphone so Ill have a look when I get home.
