im trying to run an x server to access a solaris cad program but i need to install a program so i can access the internet and file system. what is the best way to do this?

i have a 256mb usb flash drive. i cannot boot off of it as my mobo does not support it. can i use a poor mans install and install the client to the flash drive?

is there any other way to do this other than using damn small linux?

i am a newbie so i find dsl a bit hard to use.

You might want to try SLAX http://slax.linux-live.org/documentation.php which is small, 182mb and has kde3.3 and a nxclient module.

Just download slax, nxclient module.
Using any iso editor, ex: winiso, insert the module into /module directory in that iso, save and burn.

Follow the instruction how to run slax from usb. :D :D :D

i cant use nxclient as the server does not have nx server.

i need to use a program called AEGIS client by meetinghouse and it comes as an .rpm file for red hat.

any tips on making it a module?

Cannot help with aegis. Since you have redhat aegis then try redhat based live cd.

This is something I found for Solaris that you can install as server and then run with thin client (pxes) or knoppix or any distro:
