Have you logged in as root and tried

netcardconfig

I finally found the Thread! Sorry that I posted on ANOTHER thread about SOUND AND NETWORK...but I have the same network configuration on my Motherboard and the Broadcom is not recognized. I did a netcardconfig command and Koppix says that "no supported network card is found" or something similar. I tried to change the IRQ allocation in my BIOS, and unlike the OTHER thread where a person had some success with this, it didn't work for me. I went back to my original BIOS settings and am now trying to find answers. Is it maybe, that this particular Network chip just isn't supported yet? If so (I am using Knoppix 3.1) will there be more support with 3.2? I am holding off on using that because there are still some language problems in that version as of yet.

Any ideas?

A reply to myself! Anyway, I started the latest 3.2 version (3-23-2003) and it looks great! The only problem is....same thing with the sound which I'm not worried about) and the network adapter (which I really want to work badly). So, for now, I have tried everything I can think of for the Broadcom adapter on a ASUS motherboard....IRQ assignments included.

If anyone has any other ideas, please shoot. Not me, of course....but I am interested, and I'm sure the person who posted originally for this problem is too.

Thanks

Did you try a

modprobe tg3

If that doesn't work what does

cat /proc/pci

tell you?

Bobmeister
03-25-2003, 03:48 AM
Sorry, but I didn't get all of the info yet...but I'm working on it. First, modprobe tg3 says basically, that there might be incorrect modual parameters and that no such device is found. Also, it mentions the IO or IRQ parameters not being right, maybe, and I heard that this solved someone elses problems.

I DID NOT get the cat /proc/pci info yet because I forgot to put the space between the cat and/ so I didn't enter a valid command. I did look at the messages and of course there is so much stuff there, that it's hard to find what you are looking for. Anyway, there ARE some IRQ conflicts, that it detects, but I can't tell from the codes exactly what it is. I will go back now and get the cat /proc/pci message and get back to you, but I'm getting tired and will quit soon.

rickenbacherus
03-25-2003, 03:57 AM
OK well obviously if you still have IRQ conflicts then the driver can't load. I probably didn't need to tell you that eh? I hope that when you say 'quit' you just mean for the night and not 'quitting Linux'. post back whenever you're ready, I'm in no hurry. gluck

Oh yeah - go ahead and post the ENTIRE output of cat /proc/pci if you would please.

Getting closer, but I have to find a solution. The dmesg is filled with info that I was talking about before, but now I can see where cat /proc/pci is telling me something. I don't think that knoppix is recognizing any IRQ higher than 15 (the old standard). I have 21 IRQ's and my sound card (integrated) is on 18 normally. OK, so is the sound card...and it's not working either. My PROBLEM is figuring out how to assign a lower IRQ to the Ethernet chip. In the BIOS, it's not all that clear, but I'll study up on it and see if I can get this thing working.

I can assign IRQ's to SLOTS but the card isn't in a slot...it's integrated. So I must have missed something in the BIOS. I'm a little new at this so please excuse me if I sound dumb. But thanks for pointing me BACK to the IRQ situation because I'm thinkint that's it.

Question...can the Knoppix "see" IRQ's that go up to any number? My new motherboard surprised me with the 21 IRQ's (actually 22 counting 0) or is that now a limitation? The original post on this thread was NOT me but he has the EXACT SAME MOTHERBOARD and Network chip (Broadcom 4401 family..and it works great, by the way).

Also, where do I find a listing of all of the rood commands like the ones that you have already told me about? I'm having trouble finding that on any documents. Thanks for all of your help!

rickenbacherus
03-25-2003, 04:31 AM
I can assign IRQ's to SLOTS but the card isn't in a slot...it's integrated.

OK so assign all of your lower IRQ's and see what happens, maybe that will make some available for your non-assignable devices. That's just a guess now - I only have old equipment. :D

Question...can the Knoppix "see" IRQ's that go up to any number?
Not sure but I think so. Can anyone give a better answer to that?

Also, where do I find a listing of all of the rood commands like the ones that you have already told me about?
Here is one source although maybe not the best.
http://www.er.uqam.ca/nobel/r10735/unixcomm.html#tth_sEc2
edit Found another:
http://www.unixguide.net/linux/linuxshortcuts.shtml
also - hit <tab> in a term for all commands on your system - watch out! :D

But you see...... 'cat' is something you 'add on' if you will. It means 'concatenate' or literally "to link together". 'proc' is a virtual fiesystem. pci is obviously the pci bus. I really don't know where a good info source for all of that is. Maybe someone who reads this post could chime in. Rock mumbles perhaps would know.
Oh yeah - check out the link in my sig. it's got alot of excellent links.

Thanks, I am not giving up. However, I do have a little problem with TIME and a lot of other projects going on...so the speed of this might not be all to your liking....but if you have time...so do I.

First, let me say, that the 3.1 distribution is working PERFECTLY in my wife's laptop, so I KNOW that it's just a configuration issue with my MUCH newer machine. I am patient....but like to find and solve problems.

Thanks for the links to a lot of commands...they are all in my bookmarks now. I am TOTALLY new to Linux, and my plan is to use my wife's old hard drive and install a full version of some distribution on that machine some day to have a totally Linux machine....so what I learn now "playing" will help me down the road.

OK, maybe a dumb question, but I need an answer. Since I am getting all of this info in Linux, but replying from Windows where I can get all of this stuff to work (Shame on me!), I have two problems. First, the output from the cat /proc/pci command is so big that I can't see the whole thing at the same time and I can't figure out how to get the page to scroll. The bar on the left shows how much is not shown, but I can't get it to move....what keyboard entry is required for that.

Next, how do I copy the text? I can highlight it...but dummy me in my windows mentality...don't know how to get it all on the "clipboard" from the root to paste into some application where it will be useful to make a file. Sorry about being stupid, and maybe I should spend more time figuring out that stuff myself...but I'm too busy keeping my wife's Windows ME machine running without blowing up that it's hard to do!

Anyway, jokes asside (what joke?....Windows?...ha-ha)..thanks, in advance for your help!

cat /proc/pci | more

You can add a 'pipe' and 'more' after most any command (as far as I know)

How to copy text to clipboard? - highlight it and it's there. I know windows has caused some severe damage but it can be repaired. :D
I like to use my middle mouse button to paste.

Use the arrow keys to move up or down in a terminal. Some terminals have scroll bars - it all depends on which term you like. Personally I prefer the Konsole.

Bobmeister
03-25-2003, 03:06 PM
OK...I'll get to work. But the arrow keys didn't work for me, and that's why I asked...but I'll get the info one way or the other!

The damage is severe...it may take some time for a full recovery. There are many like me in a living nightmare. Medication hasn't helped. Only a good slap in the face every now and then is useful.....

rickenbacherus
03-25-2003, 03:14 PM
Seems you're right - the arrow keys don't work in an Xterm. You could just type 'konsole' in whatever term you have open. Konsole is very user friendly.

Bobmeister
03-25-2003, 03:27 PM
Well, yes....I wasn't using the Konsole...just the root command window. The Konsole is the way to go and I got the info to look at. I will paste it below. Before that, just so you know...this is the NORMAL configuration of my computer. I haven't messed with any BIOS settings yet...although I have tried that before with no effect. But here goes and I hope that you can see something. One thing I notice is the low IRQ numbers. My BIOS has 21 IRQ's and I am having difficulty figuring out in the BIOS how to assign and IRQ for the Network integrated chip. I have to research that a little more. But here it is!

Wait a minute! I SEE the Ethernet controler at IRQ 10!!!! Now, what the heck! At least it is identifying it correctly. Now I have to dig even further, but I think we are on to something...but I didn't see that before so I KNOW that Knoppix KNOWS it is there. Let me see about any conflicts.

Bobmeister
03-25-2003, 03:52 PM
Also, I am getting dmesg info to look at. There it seems to be talking about a lot of IRQ conflicts that might be related to this problem. However, when I was in Linux (and now I'm in Windows again), somehow the file got lost in the translation..I did something too fast and didn't save the file properly. Now I have to do it all over again!

At the risk of taking a lot of space, let me post the rest of the information. I can see at the BIOS post, that the Network card is on IRQ 10 with NOTHING ELSE assigned to that. However, there is a bunch of stuff on IRQ 9 that dmesg says is a problem. I don't see how that is related to the ethernet, however.

Here it is:

My friend you have multiple IRQ conflicts. You have so many it's a wonder it works at all.

I see you are using APIC. APIC bad - no APIC good. Try it without APIC like this:

knoppix noapic

Of course you will need to add all the cheat codes you normally use to get the OS booted properly. That may very well solve your problems after all APIC stands for Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller. Note the 'interrupt' part. :D

If that doesn't do it go fix your BIOS.
Unfortunately I do not know what your BIOS is like. There should at least be a way to disable the BIOS automatically assigning IRQ's.

edit
DOH! I forgot one- you could also try this:

knoppix pci=biosirq

Yes...well, I thank you in advance and will try the cheatcode. I hope it works. Just so you know....in Windows, there aren't any conflicts...and with all of the IRQ's available, it seems to work fine. If the APIC is the problem HERE, I have a work-around and can leave the BIOS alone...however, before you wrote back, I had an idea to work in the BIOS which might help if this doesn't work.

I'll let you know how things go!

I tried both cheatcodes and separately, and concurrently and it didn't work. I tried about 4 different BIOS configurations and it didn't work. But I noticed something. The Sound card (which isn't working) and the Ethernet "card" are ALWAYS on the same IRQ NO MATTER WHAT I DO. When one moves, the other moves...and I can't separate them.

I am going to unintall my sound card, move it to another slot. I think that might make it find another IRQ. After that...I'll see if they are separated, and then try again. I'll check Windows function first, but then go to Linux and see what happens.

Only problem, I have to go to work soon...and will be "out" for a while....but still, I thank you even if this doesn't work.

Last one for a while. I got the IRQ's separated by changing slots. Actually, the configuration is better now for Windows also because nothing is shared between the sound card and the Ethernet (it really didn't matter anyway before)...but now the Sound card, and ethernet have their OWN IRQ's. But....alas.....Knoppix STILL won't let either of them work. It says that the sound card is unsupported, which makes sense since it's not a very common card. But the ethernet is still not "found" after I have tried all suggestions. My only thing is to play again with the BIOS and see what happens.

Well, if this doesn't work, I'll try the Knoppix 3.2 again and see if that works with this new configuration. If that doesn't work, I'll use my wife's computer! But noooooooooo!....she's writing a thesis!

Oh...how I dream of Knoppix....

I'm getting sick now....

Thanks for all of your help...

I'll check the forums later after work

Just so you know....in Windows, there aren't any conflicts...and with all of the IRQ's available, it seems to work fine.

Windows does IRQ sharing. You can have everything on the same IRQ. OK so that's a nice feature but still........well you know :D

I'm back! Don't know how much I'll get to playing with this tonight because I have to watch the kids. You know.

Hey, I am really new at this Linux stuff, but want to say that this forum is really great. I just have to sit for a couple of days to READ and LEARN. I have been happy with Windows XP...but man...the resources sapped up just running itself. The Unix thing can do the same work in half the time and so efficiently. I look forward to getting "up to speed" with this stuff one day.

Anyway, not related to the stuff above, I just wanted to say THANKS for all of the willingness to help around here.

I'll try a few more things in the BIOS before giving up on the Network card for now. Remember, I have another computer sitting right next to me (when my wife isn't using it!) that runs Knoppix PERFECTLY. So I can work my way around that when I want to be online. In the mean time, I can practice all of the other stuff here because Knoppix runs great except for the above sound and network problems. I'll get there....

On my 550 MHz w/ 224M I can watch a DVD, surf the web, run system monitoring apps, and use a graphhics proggie (gimp) all at the same time and still have processor & ram left. It's been running for 16 days now. My Linux router/DHCP server has been up for nearly 6 weeks! WIN2k made this machine a dog.

de nada hombre'

You're addicted to Linux - I can tell. :D

Bobmeister
03-26-2003, 01:19 AM
Well, if not addicted yet, getting hooked. I might disappear for a while learning stuff. I'll ask more when I run into problems or just have questions that I can't find answered on the forums. I can run the Knoppix on my machine and learn playing with that....and my wife's machine doing the internet stuff.

I will get this network card to work eventually.

The "slow" machine problem....well, as they say, you can get THROUGH Windows with BRUT FORCE! My machine runs OK because it's kinda new, but you KNOW there is something wrong when you see yourself running out of memory with one application going with 256MB of RAM, right? I have a GIG because I work with a lot of image files. But SHEEEESH...come on. I DO have to say that at least Windows will run for a few days before needing a reboot....something needed every hour or two with earlier versions!

But who would run a Windows Server anymore? With Linux, you can set it and forget it. I'll get addicted to this stuff for sure, if not YET. But my problem now is to UNLEARN (repair the damage) and LEARN a lot of the inside "how to's" so that I don't feel lost.

Again...thanks.

I've often heard it said that Linux is not well documented-PSHAW! There is so much documentation you couldn't possibly read it all. Here are some other great forums:

Well, Rickenbacherus, I have finally done just about EVERY combination I can think of. None of it worked. I finally found a combination of assigned IRQ's that eliminated ALL conflicts, but the net card is still "not supported" and the sound card is being mis-identified and of course, not supported.

But how I am loving Knoppix!

So....here is the deal. I am wondering if it's just a matter of my PARTICULAR hardware not being supported with available drivers. That being the potential case, how do we know? Is it documented anywhere or is there a way to PETITION Klaus to include certain hardware for the next release?

Since I am not doing a HARD DISK installation I'm not sure of finding the proper drivers and "installing" them every time. But alas...things do work perfectly in the wife's laptop and EVERY OTHER computer we have tried 3.1 in (still working on 3.2....Video is a little different and I'm trying to get the refresh rate up)....so I'll keep enjoying my edumacation (as my wife says) with things as they are for now.

rickenbacherus

Since you got your IRQ's fixed try this:

modprobe tg3

and see if that will get your NIC working.

Bobmeister
03-27-2003, 01:45 AM
Yes, I should have mentioned that I did a modprobe tg3 command and it had no effect. I still get the "cannot find supported network card" box. But it's OK. I still might get it working some day.

In the mean time, 3.2 really looks great. It has a really nice "feel" and that apps work fine. This is not related to this thread, but it seems as if 3.2 is handling the video differently...I have a slightly smaller screen, same resolution, but it seems as if the refresh rate is smaller. I tried a cheatcode, but it I might have the code wrong because it complained that it didn't exist.

Also, is there a method to get into the Video Driver and change settings from within Knoppix..I can't find anything in the System or other consoles that seems to be what I'm looking for.

rickenbacherus
03-27-2003, 02:11 AM
Ah yes, the good old XF86Config file..............

Become root and type:

mcedit /etc/X11/XF86Config

That is where you can change resolution, screen size, color depth, etc. This is a vast subject. If you want go ahead and post your XF86Config file and we can try to get it to do what you want.

Bobmeister
03-27-2003, 04:49 AM
OK, I'm going to let this one drop because first, I got the cheatcodes to work....as usual, I was too fast and mistyped. But the funny thing is, I kept making the SAME mistake. Sheeesh...I'm getting old. But with a couple of little adjustments, the screen is looking really nice.

This thread is about tired out now....look for me when something blows up and I need HELP again!!!!

By the way.....do you ever sleep?

try this :
When using the driver (linux-7.0.0.zip) from broadcom (http://www.broadcom.com/support/downloaddrivers.php)
it works now. (on the livecd version 3.3 from 24/09/2003)
unpack the source zipfile bcm5700-7.0.0.tar.gz to you /home/knoppix

type:
tar xvzf bcm5700-7.0.0.tar.gz

type:
cd /home/knoppix/bcm5700-7.0.0/src

type:
make

type:
insmod bcm5700.o

launch netconfig from menu

greetzzzzzz from Belgium,

PS request on german site (www.knoppix.de) have been made to insert the broadcom driver on the cd.
