- XFree 4.3
- Language bugfixes for english version

Hi,

I am new in the Linux world. So I do not understand what means unstable in first line.
I understand that the KDE 3.1.1 release is not working 100%. Is it correct ?
What about english language problem in OpenOffice and Knoppix it self ? It was solved ?

Thank you,
Alex

So does this version finally make it possible to launch using enlightenment as the windowing environment?

I tried it and.... I like it a lot better then previous pre-releases !!
Saving your configuration went well... just a shame a few minor things (like window resizing) weren't stored.
One problem I have found : smb browsing didn't work for me ...
It said something about kio_smb ... maybe it's gotta do with the kdemultimedia-kio-plugins ??
(I see them in KDE 3.1.1 stable, but maybe they aren't in sid ??)
Thnx for anyone who can explain this to me 8)

Alex, about the stable/unstable thing, the Debian distribution (which Knoppix is based on) considers everything that hasn't been tested VERY thoroughly "unstable". The KDE developers think 3.1.1 is stable enough, but it hasn't been out for long, so it could be that major bugs turn up and we'll see 3.1.2 in a few days. Or not.
Knoppix starts in English by default now, this was fixed in the previous 3-21b-release. I'm not sure about OpenOffice, but "Autosetup" sounds very nice ;-)

sfish, I don't think so, it probably would've been in the changelogs.

Eduardo, check the mirrors linked to on the Knoppix homepage. My prejudice is that German mirrors take less time to get updated, but I may very well be wrong.

Neje,

Thank you for your explanation. I have another doubt. The topicīs name is V3.1-2003-03-23 (Experimental release). Is it correct ? Is the latest release 3.2 ?

Thats just a miss-print or typo, take a look at the mirrors and the files name is V3.2-2003-03-23

Yes i cut and pasted this from the changelog and there was a typo there. It's fixed now. Thanks.

I have now downloaded this release myself and OpenOffice is English by default (in the EN version, of course). I really like the new transparent mouse cursor too ;-) .

So far, so good. This is the best release so far, for me. It has solved one MAJOR annoyance on my system: vertical refresh. On my other system (Celeron 466/SiS620/on-board video) I could get 75 Hz refresh @1024x768. On my friend's system (AMD 1800+/SiS735/GeForce 256) , I could get 85 Hz at the same resolution -- but on my system (AMD 1800+/AMD761/GeForce2 MX), I could only get 60 Hz. That's now fixed; I'm getting 85 Hz -- I think it's the new XFree86 version.

The new fonts are really clean. The new pointers and cursors are an improvement, though I have mixed feelings about the drop shadows. OpenOffice.org is fixed. Mozilla is up to 1.3 -- cool!

It looks like the Config file format is changed -- trying to load mine from the last version seems to have confused KDE, but I'm not surprised and only mildly disappointed..

This is the version I'm going to install to HD, and my transition away from Win98 SE will accelerate.

just booted up with the 'experimental' 3.2 with XFree 4.3 and had problems.. i'm using the SiS 730 chipset (on ECS K7SOM) and it was working fine with the xmodule vesa.. couldn't get vesa to display 1024x768 even after playing around with xvrefresh. knoppix finally tried the module fbdev when i set it xvrefresh to 50 and it worked..

any idea why? i'm not even sure what the difference is between these two modules

This release now has everything working fairly well. Open Office now works in english. Boot speed is okay. Seems to have video problems with Intel 815 Chip set (Dell GX150).

Yes, what was changed. Everything seems to work fine in the 3/23/03 'experimental' release except smb Windows shared printers. Worked flawlessly in 3.1.

Does LyX export to PDF again as it did in 3.1?

ECS K7SOMInteresting. Everything else works on this board (sound, network, modem)? I was considering it too for a small Knoppix box...

yeah everything else seems to work fine.. i don't have a modem.. it has an AMR slot which i'm not really sure what that means but i suppose i have to get something else to use the modem.

Loper

...it has an AMR slot...

AMR = Audio/Modem Riser. It's a minimal expansion slot to break out those functions from the chipset. Since these are software-emulation functions, AMR is not as good as a separate audio card and modem; it involves higher system overhead and probable lower performance.

The initial 3.2 release only gave me a 60 Hz refresh whereas 3.1 worked perfectly. This release, for my machine, is freakin' gold! Thanks Klaus. I owe you one.
