View Full Version : x-server does not start automatically

Hello Everybody,

i've got a Knoppix 3.6 HD installation. my prob is, that i don't now how to configure the system to start the x-server automatically!
first i've to login and to type "startx". is it possible to have a login-screen like on windows systems?? well, i've senn this before but don't know who to manage it....

This is starting to sound like a common problem.

I have knoppix 3.4 and recently did an apt-get update and now i have to manually login and type startx. KDM doesn't load automatically anymore even though it is in /etc/rc5.d

When i manually try to start kdm as root nothing happens. No error messages or anything.

It's common not to get x server automatically if you install knoppix from outside kde ( from command line login ). The only solution I know is to do a reinstall from inside KDE.

Your problem also common if update KDE from/inside KDE. KDE should be update/upgrade from outside KDE where KDM is not running. You can try install GDM as an alternative to KDM.
