Burning a data DVD on Knoppix 3.4 using the LG GSA4120 and Philips media fails while burning a CD media with the same burner works. This is the log file - any idea what's wrong? Thank you in advance
Conrad

Beccon,

This may not help but I have an LG GSA4120 and have successfully used K3B for CDs and DVDs. I have only used RITEK DVD-R and Verbatim DVD+RW.

I'm guessing that you ran out of space on /tmp or rather /ramdisk/tmp.

... ruined another DVD+R media ... tried growisofs direktly. No avail. What's going on?

Thank you for any help

I just have the same problem. My writer model is LG GSA-4163B. Everything was ideally with 2.6.8 kernel. Now I've switched back to 2.4.28 and the problem occured.

I've broken 3 DVDs. But: the speed k3b tried to burn them was 12x - and the discs are 8x. As of writing this post I burn DVD with this configuration but I've lowered writing speed to 4x. This helped. However, The CPU usage increased to almost 80%. It wasn't the case with 2.6.8 kernel. That's the only difference I see.

My conf: Debian, 2.4.28/2.6.8, "On the fly", k3b, growisofs 5.21, 1G free space on HD, 4.3G DVD+R Esperanza 8x inside.

I'll post some new info if I find sth..

Regards,
Tomasz

--------------

Ok. This is new information:
I've found this message in dmesg after burning DVD with high CPU load:
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 643, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Write (10) 00 00 00 02 20 00 00 10 00
kernel: hdc: error waiting for DMA
hdc: dma timeout retry: status=0xd0 { Busy } Jan 20 01:07:13 apollo kernel: hdc: DMA disabled
hdc: ATAPI reset complete

So I _think_ the reason was with ide-cd & ide-scsi modules not properly loaded. After some tries, here is working configuration:
/etc/modules:
ide-scsi

/etc/modutils/dvdrw:
options ide-cd ignore="hdc hdd" alias scd0 sr_mod pre-install sg modprobe ide-scsi pre-install sr_mod modprobe ide-scsi

And of course this one in menu.lst of Grub:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.28nthx root=/dev/hdb3 ro hdd=ide-scsi hdc=ide-scsi

So, take care!
Tomasz
