is having root console linked to in kde upon hd install security risk? i've always been told not to run gui on hd install as root..is a link just as same?

No. root is not that insecure. In fact, for most desktop, you already don't have any security when you allow people to be near the PC. The number one requirement for a truly secure multi-user system is physical security.

Without physical security, I can just pop in a KNOPPIX CD and boot then access whatever is on your installed FS, even put in a key logger etc.

Unless you use a encrypted file system and enter the key every time you boot, there is no such thing as security for a PC.

So don't worry too much about root other than you may accidentally delete things like a "rm *" at "/". To prevent that, a good backup strategy is more important than not using root.
