i am brand new to linux (currently having problems with win98 and wanting to switch to linux)and i was wondering what to do after caldera loads and you are given a line with A:\> similar to the ones used in msdos.

And is there a version of aim that works with linux?

Welcome to the linux world!

It takes some patience and willingness to learn to run and resolve (problems with) open source.

AFAIK you should not be getting a prompt like that if you are in linux. I think you're in DOS.
Caldera is no longer supported and there are other issues with that defunct distro too.

You might want to try a live cd distro like knoppix, gnoppix, or dyne:bolic. There are others as well. Check out www.distrowatch.com

I don't use aol but yes you can run aim in linux. Here is a link: http://www.aim.com/get_aim/linux/latest_linux.adp?aolp=

what should i do?

It sounds to me like a bios issue. You need to go into the bios and make sure that booting from the cdrom is enabled.

The link below descibes how to access your bios. Good luck
