Knoppix cannot find file system

Hello

Im new to this...so please ignore my ignorance!

Im trying to load Knoppix by the CD & floppy boot.....I getto the 1st page & I get the message "cannot find file system".

How come? what am I doing wrong?

I used mkfloppy...altho I couldnt find it on the CD ...so I used one off the Debian site.

As I said I am new to computers & Linux...but would like to learn.

Any advice greatfully received!!!

You have to burn it as an image. If you did that then maybe it was a bad burn. When it is booting at the boot prompt hit F2 to see some cheatcodes. Then type knoppix testcd. That will check the files on the cd to see if they are okay. If they are reboot and try some different cheatcodes if it doesnt load again. You type in cheatcodes like: knoppix lang=us nodma noapic vga=normal...

i have the same problem, and when using knoppix testcd, it attempted to load knoppix. if it helps, i was using Nero 5.5 to burn using the default, 48x. i checked the md5 checksum, and it was ok. i used the bittorrents

I'll bet both of you just dragged the ISO into Nero and burned one ISO file onto a CD. That simply is not the way to do it; it does not put a boot structure or a file structure on the CD. You need to use the burn image option under the file menu in Nero to make a bootable file (or to make any proper CD when you already have an ISO image).

Also, just as an aside, while burning at 48x should work just fine, I've certainly seen that burning slower yields more reliable results. I burn most of the things I want to keep at 4x, and I certainly would suggest doing this at least until you have a working copy of Knoppix. Once you get it right and have all problems resolved, then switching to a faster speed may be reasonable (you're likely to burn a newer Knoppix CD before the old one ages out anyway). But for now, while trying to resolve a problem, burn your first CD at a more moderate speed.

I know for a fact that my Knoppix CD works, but it gives me the same error when I try to load it in one of my machines. It's an older machine but I don't see how that's a problem. This machine has run normal linux distros before. It will start to load like normal then it fails while looking for the CDRom drive. Above the error message it looks like my CDRom drive was found on /dev/hdd. I guess it isn't looking in this spot because it thinks my CDRom is a hard drive. Is there a way I can set my CDRom path on boot?

Never fails. I ask a question then I find my own answer. I just used the boot option 'knoppix nodma atapicd' and it works fine now. I found this answer from a previous post. I'm not sure if it would've worked with just one of the options. I'll try it later and see.

Its possible. You said you checked the md5 of the iso and it checked out?

Might just be a defective disk. Mabye trying again at a lower burning speed? 16x should be a nice comprimise.

OK. If the CD is burnt properly you should be able to stick it into a Windows systems and see all of the files there. In fact, as long as you don't have auto-start disabled it will bring up your default browser and open a help file. Can you insert it in a windows system and see all of the files? (IF you can't it sure will not boot.)

Could well be. I've heard reports of CD's writing OK at a faster than rated speed, but I've also seen serious problems with high speed writing even when the media was rated for high speed. So I'm a little puzzled why you would even ask this, knowing that you burned at over the rated speed, rather than burn a copy at a nice slow speed.

ok, i just re-burned it at 16x, no go. i could view in windows though. i'll try tastywheats answer and post the results

If you're getting far enough to enter the cheat codes (as this response implies) then use the testCD cheat code to validate the CD first. Then try other cheat codes to try to find what works for you. My desktop boots fine without any. My notebook needs both noscsi and acpi=off. I just tested Knoppix on another desktop system, at first got lots of what seemed to be read errors on the CD, so much so that X would not start. The cheat code nodma seems to have resolved that completely. Sorry, I know of no good way to determine exactly what combination of cheat codes one needs (assuming that you have reached that point).

when i try to use the testcd cheat, it tries to load linux to no avail though knoppix nodma atapicd worked

now another question:can i get FireFox and Thunderbird on knoppix instead of mozilla? or would i have to install it to my hard drive?

also how much space on a partition is needed for knoppix? i have a 4 gb one here and it wnats me to make a new partition instead of use the 4gb one i have :/
