Hi. Ok, this is my first post.... in like the 100th forum on all sorts of computer topics. But this one seems a little special. My first instance in networking OR linux(or unix for that matter). So if i sound stupid with this, please forgive me.

This is a problem that probably has a simple solution.

We have a home network. It's wireless, but the internet connection sharing is a wireless access point, so i can connect to our wireless connection via a wired connection. Knoppix finds my wired card just fine. It does NOT find my wireless card. I looked into the matter and the card i have is on a broadcom chipset, which cannot be used in linux yet.

So, i have connected down 2 flights of sairs to get to the access point. So far so good. But there are 2 questions i have before i connect the network and boot with knoppix again:

1. Is knoppix compatable to network with windows? The computer i am networking with is windows only, i am pretty sure knoppix could read it's files, but what about it reading my files?

2. How do i access a network with knoppix? Some of the FAQs i've read say something about "netwok transparency," i have no idea what that means and i am new to the linux environment. How to i use a network in knoppix(more specifically, how to i access another computer that is on the network?)

Thanks for any help i can be given. I try to research myself, i won't ask questions that i could find the answer to, but if i didnt find the page with the answer and you know of it, tell me! I continue to develop a (large) list of avorites on MANY different topics... the more the marrier, they have helped me so far, i RARELY even need to use a search engine!

Hello,

I am extremely new to Linux too .... so maybe it might be the blind helping the blind but here goes ...

It is simply not true that you cannot use Broadcom wireless chipsets in Linux yet.

It is true that they are supported natively yet because of the recalcitrance of Broadcom, but there are ways and means.

I have managed to get wireless networking working using Belkin cards (PCI & PCMIA -- FD57000uk v2 & FD57010uk v2) which use a Broadcom chipset. These connect to a wireless broadband router downstairs.

There is a free way and a $/£ way. The free way is using ndiswrapper, the $/£ way is using Linuanx's Driverloader found at:

DriverLoader : http://www.linuxant.com/driverloader/

Of course, I used the free solution.

It is fiddly, and sometimes it takes some time to get working, but it is possible; using Knoppix 3.6, with either the 2.4 or 2.6 kernel.

There are detailed instructions on how to do this found in my post: Success with Knoppix 3.6 and Wireless Networking found in the Networking section of this fora. Its a sticky -- right at the top so it should be easy to find.

I won't repeat them here.

Re: reading and writing to Windows machines. I know it is possible, it is just I have not worked out how to do it yet. You do it through Samba. Google and it should get you going. I have not got around to doing it yet -- waiting to build a specialised Linux box for the purpose.

Oh yes, googling "linux wireless" will get you lots and lots of information about how to get wireless networking going under linux, including, if you sift the information, how to get Broadcom chipsets to work too.

I admit that it did take quite a bit of work to a. find; b. get it to work with the vagaries of wireless.

HTH.

Cheers,

In a home network environment, cable modem, firewall/accesspoint/router, I have mounted shared windows drives in Linux, KNOPPIX, using sambamnt, if my memory is correct. Basically I attacked the problem from command line (as root) and man pages. It went smoothly.

To make KNOPPIX available to windows requires setting up Samba on the KNOPPIX machine. I have done this, but it is a bit more erratic., meaning sometimes I have achieved my goals and others I have not gotten it set up the way I wanted. I always can make it go, but not always with the security I want.

Knoppix is quite compatable with windows networking. Its called samba.
Knoppix can both read the other PC's files along with your. Your hardrive should be something like "hda1"

The easiest way to acess a windows computer is to open konqueror (its the window that pops up on boot) and type smb://computername

Thanks for all the help. Now, I am going to look at the sticky mentioned a couple replies ago, but (despite my current ignorance) i am going to ask one more question: Can OTHER computers see Me on the network when i am booted with Knoppix.

Also, I have some things i would like to install to help networking along. A few windows/linux components i have the source for, and can compile them, but they require me to be able to WRITE the root directory /bin to install executables (one such that i dont have the source for is AIM, but there are others some i made)

Not to be confused, i am not new to this kind of environment (i have a UNIX 486 i use all the time), but i am unfamiliar with Linux. I have heard they are similar and i've seen programs that will run on both. So i might sound a little more informed then i make myself sound

You can set up a samba server from knoppix so others can see you. Go to the Knoppix menu and search around for it. (I can't remember where it is)

As for the programs, to install them you would have to remaster the cd. Of course if you want to use something to IM, you could try Gaim. It works with all the major IM networks.

linux is the kernel, gnu is the rest(basically). So 90% of the command you use under any *nix work on any of the linux distributions.

However, I don't know what is UNIX 486 as my guess is it may be a pretty old *nix and even *nix evolve and more and more applications are added.

Well, I actually baught my UNIX OS disk ike ayear ago (i forget which one but its command line only, no GUI yet...dont have the money!). The 486 is the computer itself. used to run MS-DOS, but DOS is CRAP soi made it unix.

By the way, the thing works like a charm. Im posting this reply from within Knoppix! And the thing found my settings without any of the retries. Took about 5 secs once i knew what to do!

I also found an online book about samba, which i am reading on how to get it started. What i am hoping is that i will be able to do all my schoolwork in linux(so far its much better suited) and just use windows for games(windows is much better suited for that).

But my dad's computer is WINDOWS only. He doesent want to have linux on it, and the only time he uses knoppix is when i have data stored in some program that isnt for windows (like KGEO for instance, i use it in my advanced geometry class all the time, but it isnt in windows) Luckily my dad connects directly to the access point, so there is no fretting with the wireless driver. He just needs to get samba running!

To run Samba on every boot automatically, run this command in root konsole: update-rc.d samba defaults
