The following is the extract from the pcidevicelist

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
Subsystem: VIA Technologies, Inc.: Unknown device 4161
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 5
I/O ports at e000 [size=256]
Capabilities: <available only to root>

When using the KNOPPIX/Configure/soundcard configure menu it reports that a PCI sound card is detected Via Technologies|VT8233 [AC97 Audio Controller but when the test sound is tried it reports
/lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs/kernel/drivers/sound/via82Cxxx_audio: init module no such device
insmod
failed
insmod sound slot -0 failed

This is my foirst attempt at using linux so I would appreciate some easy to folow advice. (Sound works fine under Windows XP by the way)

Enter your BIOS and disable the "automatic IRQ assignment" option. If that doesn't fix it open a terminal and type:

dmesg

post the output.

I assume you are booting from the CD and have not installed it to your hard drive.

Well it would appear that you have a very common problem associated with the VIA onboard sound. Here's a link to a post about VIA chipsets.

I found it interesting that thewalkingman (the same individual that bumped this post) has posted to this one as well.

http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=973

Why he couldn't have said something slightly more intelligent than 'bump" is beyond me.

I personally would not have been offended if you had mentioned that you already knew something of this particular problem. No matter- I enjoy looking at others 'dmesg' 'lspci -v' et. al. as no two are ever the same. It's a great way to learn. For example - from Stephen Rees' post I learned how much RAM, what processor, how many drives he's got and that his girlfriend is a hottie! That dmesg can tell you everything! :D

I only have very old hardware and I may not know a great deal about all things Linux but I have yet to find a machine that I could not make function under Linux.

Thank you to thewalkingman and rickenbacherus.

It would appear that the on board VIA sound card has some issues that can only be resolved by a later release of the CD.

This will certainly delay any notion I had of moving to Linux in the near future, but it is certainly interesting to experience an alternative to XP.
