Multi Tech ZDX (external) works. Also I have used US Robotics Controller based modems (PCI) that work.

You might want to look at this site: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html

Pretty much any external modem will work. Win modems do not work well in linux although some are functional, for best, easy, hassle free setup get an external modem. That way you know it is not a "win modem". They are fairly easy to find in thrift stores and such. There are plenty of sites that have hardware compatibility lists out there for real modems. All the major distros publish them for potential buyers. Most modems on the market now days are win modems so you need to consult the compatability lists before buying a new modem. A clue... if it says windows xp ready or made for windows on the box then you should keep looking.

Go here: http://hardwaredb.suse.de/productSearch.php?PHPSESSID=6e33c50ac2e51d1563f6ef 50241430db&LANG=en_UK&update_session=1&searchtype=simple&f_manufactor=&f_device=&f_groups%5B%5D=7
for a good compatability list from SuSE linux.
