I'll bet $5.00 it is a Winmodem and winmodems don't work under anything but windows. You will need a new modem that is HARDWARE CONTROLLED. You can find PCI modems that are hardware controlled, but it's easier to configure if you get an external omdem that attatches to the serial port.

VeeDubb is right it is a winmodem but there may be hope - (some of them actually work under Linux amazingly enough). You can check here:
http://pctelcompdb.sourceforge.net/search.php

And (if you want to do a hard drive install) this driver just might work:

I have to admit it irks me when I see replies that say you can't use Winmodems in Linux.

I've been using them since I started learning Linux two years ago with Peanut ( a great distro by the way ). It's true that Winmodems are a PIA but they will work fine w/ a bit of effort.

I'm using Kurumin right now & it was great to find Carlos added the LT modem drivers to it and I believe he has more in the latest iso. One thing I found with Knoppix 3.1 was that I could'nt build the drivers for the HCF Linmodem, there's a problem with the GCC listed in /proc/version and changing the makefile to point to it made no difference.

My point is the drivers are out there and it's usually nothing more then building from the source, same as everything else I install.

I like what Carlos has done with Kurumin and winmodem support. Are there any licensing issues with distributing this drivers this way? If not, we should seek for support of them in Knoppix or Morphix.

If you're stil looking for a modem, just got a creative labs blaster v.92 external serial mosdem and it took meall of 15 seconds to configure it and another minute or two to set uo my connections using KPPP.

Plus the cable it comes with is a double cable so you can use the old school large serial connecter or a 9pin.

Make sure you have the right com port selected. In general if you only have one serial port, it is tty0

But not nesicarily. Select each of the available com ports one at a time and then switch back to the modem tab and query untill you get a goot response.

I have an internal actionec call-waiting modem. I use wvdial instead of kppp. At commandline try wvdialconf as su and edit 3 lines of /etc/wvdial.conf

My wvdial.conf look like :

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyS4
Baud = 115200
Init1 = ATX
Init2 = ATS10=1
Init3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = 555-2333
Username = xxxerggren
Password = xxx1212

Now one more thing to get it to work I have to enter as su:

ifconfig eth0 down
wvdial

as superuser, I think when you harddisk install to you have to hit cancel when you get to DHCP.

man wvdial, wvdialconf
