I'm nearing the end of a successfull-thanks to the knoppix on cd system-salvage operation on my crashed winxp system having saved almost all of my data. One last step requires me to do some network stuff. Is there a utility on the cd or through the net taht will let me see network items like the uggh winxp "network places" or "network connections" features?

Yes.

First run Samba: Main Menu -> KNOPPIX -> Services -> Start Samba
Launch Konqueror's file browser and type the following URL: smb:/. It will show you all the Workgroups and machines belonging to them. The resources you want to access should be shared in the Windows PCs.

Some of the Samba commands will give additional information try either man samba or info samba

I hope this helps.
