i have a smartlink modem got it to work in suse 9.1 but now i have found that i like knoppix better and im have a problem installing the drivers for it please help i have the .rpm and .gz i know the .rpm is setup for suse so im not worryed about that one

It is not easy to get external drivers built against the knoppix kernel, but they are the links to all the stuff you need.

i did that it works! but only under root how do i make work under normal user

You took the works right out of my mouth! I pci mine and get "only available to root"
is this just like the sound (chmod's?)

Try Kanotix (Knoppix ++).... smartlink modem has a simple script built-in to install your modem.
MEPIS will recognize it automatically -- Linspire also has built-in support.
Saves a lot of time playing with the drivers...
