Hi,
Basically all i want to know is when booting from CD and knoppix is running, does it affect the installed hard drives in any way? Does it write anything to them or touch the HD boot sector? The original OS on HD will be left untouched? Also with the HD being NTFS, can knoppix read these?

Thanks in advance.
Much appreaciated.

Running Knoppix from CD should not affect your HD in any way. By default HD partitns are detected but not mounted. When mounted manually by the user the default mount is read only. It will read NTFS partitons and has the capability for 'captive NTFS' to write to the HD if desired (user must manually mount the drive then change it to read write first).
Running from CD it does not do anything to your boot sector.

On some "low" memory systems Knoppix may need to create a swap file to run the GUI. If this is the case it will ask you )or whoever is sitting at the keyboard) during the boot process if it can create a swap file. If told it's ok, it will write to the disk at that point.

the only exception to the rule is that if there is a swap partition or a swap file on any connected detectable drive it will be used unless the noswap cheat code is used. (mainly for partitioning disks and forensic use)
