Hi there,
Im currently in the process of trying to make a streaming media box for my tv out of a knoppix box (ive chosen knoppix since i only have a small hdd for use, so being able to boot from the cd is a major plus). Here are the problems i cant seem to solve (im not a linux guru, so this might be basic, if it is, im sorry)

I need to install Videolan, and have the program autostart and being listening for a stream on start up.
To install Videolan the site says.

Add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian woody main
deb-src http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian woody main

For a normal install, do:

# apt-get update
# apt-get install gnome-vlc libdvdcss2

But not, without doing a HDD install (hdd is smaller then a cd) how can i edit the sources.list as it resides on the cd?
apt-get update just gives a load of errors after it downloads the new info (mainly, it cant write to a read only file on the cd).

I have created a persistant home dir (starting knoppix with "knoppix home=scan")

Can anybody help me? thanks in advance.

Hi,

you cannot install additional software with apt-get while you are running from CD. But you can install additional software from http://klik.berlios.de - videolan is not there yet, but what do you need? The server or the client? There is a very good client app called KPlayer which can play about every format that is out there.

Greetings,
probono

Maybe NX? The FreeNX software is on many Knoppix CDs, or you can use klik://nx
