/etc/profile called twice when xterm icon clicked

In Knoppix 3.6 I have noticed that /etc/profile is called _twice_
when I click on the Terminal Program (xterm) icon
on the kde task bar.

This should not be.

You can check this with an echo statement in profile
and you will see it twice.

Anyone know how to defeat this?
