Knoppix is really nice, but don't you think it can look better? How about a better libfreetype? just check it out here (http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~dchest/xfthack/). The smoothed fonts look way better than with an unpatched libfreetype and MUCH better than on windows or mac! Best of all, it's just a copy+paste hack, you don't need to compile it (the included binary is optimized for i586). It also comes with instructions to enable the new ultra-smooth fonts in OpenOffice.org.

I already customized my knoppix with it (V3.1), and it would really be cool to have it as default.

phantastic! Look at this comparison: http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~dchest/xfthack/abc-5.png

Could you please send this suggestion to Klaus Knopper (for inclusion in Knoppix) and eadz (KnoppixKDE)?

(Btw, how did you get it to work for your Knoppix in the meantime? Remaster?)

Uhm, the left or the right one? The right one seems too fuzzy on my CRT. Haven't checked out on my other PC with an LCD though.

The smoothed fonts are on the right side, but that appears to be an old version of the hack.

You can find a screenshot of the newest version here (http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~dchest/xfthack/gpl-smooth.png). Sadly, there's no before/after, but you can compare it with your current fonts.

Interestingly, the "fuzzy" fonts look *much* better on my CRT than the newer screenshot. Seems to be heavily dependent on the type of screen...
