View Full Version : What Live CD would you recommand?

I have tried Knoppix and I like it but I have a few problems that I have not been able to fix so I am wondering what other Live CD would people recommand that I try?

The problems with Knoppix that I have is that it does not detect my parrallel and serial ports, which makes me not able to get my printer to work, and the other is my modem is detected but I can not use it.

What Live CD would you recommand in order to get these two issues to work? Thanks.

EDIT:
Also what Live CD would be able to open MAC floppy disk?

I would recommend kanotix, maybe BH8 or BH9. They seem to detect a few more things for me than knoppix after I hd installed both. I later went with kanotix because of that reason. Santa fe linux is also pretty cool. Can't hd install yet because that install version I don't believe is available yet. Mandrake Move Live got me to install mandrake community 10.1 to one of my partitions. Now I run Kanotix, Mandrake 10.1, Red Hat 9 and XP.

Thanks, rrfish72. Do you know if Kanotix can open a mac floppy disk?

yes it works.
do a search on the forum on mac + floppy. i am in a hurry just now, sorry for the short "non answer".

las is rather nice. i cant remember mandrake move but it didnt seem that bad.

helix is also good but because you can run it while using windows for forensic based stuff.

i like to either mix las and helix or knoppix and helix

helix has a built in vnc server so you can connect to it using las or knoppix.

For a small 20MB download and CD burn, with SFS-KNOPPIX you get the cloop files via the internet from Japan. See SFS-KNOPPIX in NEWS forum.

I have downloaded and tried over 75 different Live CD's. I would recommend Stux over all of the rest of them. Stux is easy to work with even for beginners. Stux is the absolute best Live CD!

My vote is DSL (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org)
A Knoppix derivative, only 50M, fits on Business Card size CDR. Same hardware detection capability as Knoppix. Latest version has firefox!! and loads of minimalist apps.

it has about 600Megs (and growing) of loadable apps called MYDSL extensions, which I can be loaded on demand from net/hd/cdrom.

Suitable for old, low ram computer, lowest spec I know is 486DX25 32M, although I read success on SX version which I take with a grain of salt. On Athlon XP2800, takes about 1.5 minutes to boot, scan/configure all hw, dhcp over wireless, load X with1024x768 24b, load firefox, google, cold shutdown. My usoft XP is still loading in 90sec

The main reason I use it on my thinkpad is I run it entirely off ram, with cdrom and hardisk unmounted, connected to fileserver via samba, compute servers via vnc; 100% no moving parts. I challenged colleagues notebook shake test; ie we shake each others notebook to heart content till something break.. no takers yet, I have smart colleagues. I have good reason to be paranoid about hardisk crashing my R31, T41, T41p, T42 all crashed on me even with IBMs hd protection software on. what can i say, I am brutal to my laptop.

no i dont work for DSL. Os used, usoft, rh, slack, debian, knoppix, vax, vms, solaris, hpux, sunos, ultrix, slax, tomrtbt, mandrake, suse, peanut, yellowdog, morphix, lindows.

Regarding STUX Live CD:

Downloaded at 88KB/s in 2 hours.

Burned to CD in 6min approx.

First install very bad display...extremely small task bar. Rebooted.

STUX loads auto after 30 secs. Many attempts to load failed if I used ENTER to reduce the load time.

When STUX is left to load auto, display size is normal. Click on STUX in apps list to display STUX window where the internet can be established with dhcp or fixed IP.

Display gui is kde and multimedia includes xmms, kaboodle and xine. Five or six editors provided.

Background is black. STUX logo appears in right center but toward the bottom.

I experienced variable loading performance with STUX...some attempts "hung". This may be due to
my media CD (GQ). I can try a different brand later on.

There are no cheatcodes for this install...boot prompt is skipped.

On my athlon 1900+ the loading took 2mins to desktop KDE.

STUX provides a mixer select at initial desktop and recognized my SIIG USBSoundwave external audio device which performed well.

Many icons are provided in the taskbar automatically.

Access to disc drives is enabled in KDE as usual.

Should a new burn on better media stabilize the loading of STUX, I feel it is a snappy distro and worthy of an inspect.

I have arch linux, knoppix LiveCD, Knoppix LiveDVD, Helix LiveCD, PCLinuxOSLiveCD,SFS-KNOPPIX LiveCD(20MB) and now STUX.

This post describes my experiment with the STUX Live CD.

More info on STUX.....

I still have problems in loading stux...performance on boot varies very much.

When I do get up and running I found the following:

I can play a .wav file in XMMS or kaboodle or noatun while listening to it on USB audio device say with headphones or an amp with speakers.

At the same time, I can run a video file through XINE and listen to its sound on the normal speakers channel, cmipci.

Thus, there are two separate audio channels available. The PCI channel is alsa mixed.

I am unaware of controls for the USB channel. Perhaps there are experts out there who have the answer!!!! What mixer is available other than alsa?

If your have trouble with Stux you can visit there forum and post there for answers. I have ran Stux on 6 different PC's and my laptop with no problems. I currently have it installed on one of the PC's. Here is a partial list of Live CD's I have reviewed. This is a very rough review.

Business-card sized live CD - DAMN SMALL LINUX - is the No. 1!

lilsirecho
12-17-2004, 03:09 AM
Re: STUX.

Booting this Live CD on my computer gives widely varying failures.

I even lose my archlinux display resolution after trying STUX.

After ten or more trys, it finally does reach KDE.

Often, cloop errors during boot tries.

I suspect I will have to wait for an upgraded version with my AGP card Radeon8500LE.

The STUX CD caused the display to shut down upon reaching desktop install...several times.

The boot ends up in command line with no X or KDE on many tries.

I guess its not ready for prime time!

Bodhi
12-17-2004, 09:40 PM
You are probably already doing so, but just in case you miss this boot cheat. Type stux xauto at boot time. I have a Ati all-in-wonder 9800 pro on one of my systems and X-window will not work if I try to use the Radeon module with Stux. I use stux xauto at boot and let Stux pick out the video driver module.

lilsirecho
12-17-2004, 10:02 PM
Bodhi;

Thanks for the info.

I don't have the opportunity to insert the boot cheat codes because the boot-up skips past it in milliseconds and holds the STUX display for 30 seconds before continuing with the boot sequence.

The program followed suggests that the time provided for boot cheat code entries is not programmed correctly.

I have much difficulty with using STUX.

As I understand the system, it reads my HDD to determine the parameters it should load. Therein lies some areas wherein the later kernels rearrange data storage and its formatting and these may affect the STUX boot-up.

I am as I said, not able to use boot cheat codes. I would enjoy having ..toram... in STUX if I could get it to load correctly every time.

I don't have a clue as to how many cheat codes are available from the Knoppix list in STUX.

I do appreciate the dual audio capability...USB and PCI and would love to get all setup in ...toram...mode. I have 3GB of ram.

Can't enter ..toram... to find out!!!!

Which ones have thier own installer program that you can run to install to hd if you want? I know knoppix and kanotix do.

lilsirecho
12-18-2004, 04:37 AM
Bodhi;
I downloaded STUX again, this time from FTP and burned a new CD.

I was unable to get the boot prompt in order to enter the cheat code(s) again.

I conclude that my system is incompatible with STUX.

P.S. Tried running the CD in PIO mode 4, no DMA. Still doesn't stop on boot prompt.

The latest STUX CD gives crc error immediately upon uncompressing and halts. The original CD could boot up if I kept trying but no boot prompt.

I just realized something that might just be the cause....my system is on kernel2.6.9-1 and all data referenced to that kernel. The kernel in STUX is 2.4.22 and the handling could well be different especially at boot prompt!

Bodhi

Stux has a very nice built is installer. Most of the Morphix distros have installer also.

Bodhi

Use the Stux mini desktop, select Stux, then control center, then select the hd that you want to install Stux to, ( on the left ) then select HD Install, (second button on right ), follow the instructions.

visit Stux forum for more info

One last comment...

I cannot load toram since the kernel in STUX is 2.4 and only 2.6 kernels will load toram.

I run DamnSmall Linux(DSL) off of a 128mb USB Key and its very quick/stable. I'd go so far as to say one of the easiest and best Live CD Distributions to use. It has automatic data backup / restoration upon shutdown/reboot to/from any device. Simply amazing.

The newest 0.9.1 release (yesterday, 12/20/04) has tons of great stuff...
Firefox (for starters)
Sylpheed Email Client, VncViewer, XPDF Viewer, Xpaint, xZGV, comes with Fluxbox and it looks nice.

Not to mention a "plethora" of extensions called 'MyDSL' which you just click on and it seamlessly loads them into your system, kind of like modules. And there are some great MyDSL extentions. Openoffice (for starters) sure can come in handy sometime. The Samba extensions make mounting local fileservers a breeze, and the hardware detection is QUICK and intuitive.

DSL even has a load toram feature to run completely off of ram (only if you have a lot of ram, please).

It is actively developed, and the userbase is friendly and helpful. Most issues are resolved on the forums on on IRC.

I come from a BSD background, and haven't actively used Linux as a desktop OS in more than 8 years. I'm very impressed. Enjoy DSL
http:///www.damnsmalllinux.org !! And Here are a list of extensible applications/libraries: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/mydsl/

My computer ia an athlon1900+ with 3Gb ram.

I entered DSL 0.9.1 through my sony CDRW 320E.

It loads to desktop x display.

Attempts to utilize ...system...network...netcardconfig are unsuccessful. The display flashes a window for netcard config and disappears.

What is the secret to getting a fixed IP installed adsl?

Re:
STUX LINUX Live CD.

Report from STUX forum says that STUX uses ..."boot floppy emulation" which is slower for installs and that Knoppix does not employ that system.

This probably explains why I cannot boot with a boot prompt display at start-up.

My cdrw is a Sony320E and is only three months old.

The "boot floppy emulation" is supposed to be for "older" CD machines.

I cannot boot STUX correctly with this CD machine.

Other computer boots with boot prompt just fine!!! Older CD machine!!!

Please ask @ www.damnsmalllinux.org forum, Im sure adsl is no biggie, but my config is laptop-> linksys wifi access point -> router -> adsl modem, so I cant help you. I have tried adsl/ics on knoppix long time ago, so I know it works.

hi

knoppix did not recognize my ATI 320M onboard card, (have a presario 2143EA laptop, with mobileAthlon 2500 and 512 mb ram). it said that the card was supported on vesa (i am totally new so i dunno what thir means) but then it didnt load Xfree86(vesa) instead managed to load Xfree86(fbdev). Do u know id kanotix or stux (since i am in the process of dling both)support this card or any other live cd for that matter. Thing is knoppix is giving problems even if it loads because the colours arent proper and the display not liek the screenshots i saw. :?: :!: I've ony used RedHat 7 before and that was just for a few weeks, and it wasnt by choice. its only now that i am trying to use linux out of choice.

As a developer, I like Pollix. However, it doesn't have MySQL with it.
I have problem with Pollix and Stux: I can not persist configuration info (which I can do with Knoppix and Kanotix).

It would be nice if in future Pollix would have MySQL and the capability of creating "/home" on harddisk and persisting configuration (like Knoppix and Kanotix).

Pollix does allow you to create a persistant home. Pollix is Knoppix based and you can create a home. I have mine on a 256 meg thumb drive. Stux is Slackware based and currently does not allow creation of persistant home on USB but you can save your configuration to a hard drive. Stux .08 is going to allow persistant home when it is released.

Hi Bodhi,
Thanks for the tip. Could you please let me know what menu in Pollix I must go in to create "/home" on the

harddisk?
I use pollix-20040309.iso to create the Pollix CD, but it seems that the Pollix from that CD doesn't have the

menu "KNOPPIX", in which I can find the menu "Configure".
However, the lack of MySQL on Pollix makes it less attractive.

I currently use Kanotix from the ISO file: KANOTIX-BUG-HUNTER-X-2004-FIX1.iso
With this version of Kanotix, I have MySQL, and I can download Eclipse, JDK + NetBean, ArgoUML ... to do the

software development.

However it still has some problems:
- The USB devices (thumb flass memory, external USB hard driver) are not plug-and-play. It means you have to

plug them to the USB ports before you start Kanotix. In the contrary, in Knoppix 3.7, you can plug devices when

Knoppix is already running.

- I can not install RPM software packages with Kanotix, because the packages database is on CD, read-only.

- I can run Tomcat4 and JBoss4, but can not run Tomcat 5 and Sun App Server 7 because of some privilleges

troubles with JMS.

- KGhostview of this version of Kanotix can not read Adobe PDF files (just blank documents appear)

However, to play around, I think Kanotix and Knoppix are OK.

How to create a persistant home with Pollix.

Pollix has 4 X-window managers; Fluxbox,IceWM,Twm, and Xfwm/XFce. IceWM is the default X-window manager. Each X-interface has different program menus. You can not access the Knoppix create a persistant home from the IceWM interface. (so far as I can see) You can access the program from XFce X-wnidow. Here is the steps I took to create a persistant home in Pollix.

1. switch to XFce X-window.
On the start menu select programs>windows managers>XFwm/XFce. The interface will change.

2. Left click on the desktop an a drop down menu appears. follow these steps:select User menu>KDE>Knoppix>configure>create a
persistant Knoppix Home Directory. The create a home wizard will launch. You are familar with creating a home so I won't bore you
with the details.

3.To go back to IceWM from XFce interface: Left click desktop and select User menu>Debian>windows managers>IceWM.

I haven't had good result from trying to use the boot cheat for loading the configuration, so at boot just use the cheat for home:
knoppix home=/dev/sda1 (or where ever you create it). I set up my desktops the way I like them first and then create my home, that way the configuration is saved the way I like it.

Hope this helps.

PS: Pollix does have mysql, go here to read the package list.
http://moe.tnc.edu.tw/~kendrew/pollix/iso/pollix.packages
I have never used mysql so I don't know how to access it in Pollix. I would suppose one would have to use the command line.

Hi Bodhi,
Thank you so much. If Pollix has MySQL, I definitely vote to use it as a software developer CD.
To use MySQL on Linux, one can run like this
- Start MySQL server by using console as root, run "mysqld", or run "sudo mysqld"
- Start MySQL client by using console, run "mysql". The schema one sees in the database will depend on the user privillege.

However, JBoss on Polix is on the CD, so the "deploy" directory of JBoss is on the CD, and I can not deploy J2EE WAR files or EAR files in JBoss.
If I copy JBoss to hard disk, it will have a lot of error with registering JMX beans and JMS when I start it from the hard disk. I don't have those problems if I run it from the CD (then I can not deploy apps) or run it from Window XP (which I don't like).

Do you have any suggestion ?

Thank you,
Linh.

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions. I've never used Jboss.

Hi all. The orginal poster asked if there was a live cd that would open a mac floppy.
I am interested in this too. Although someone replied that it works in kanotix it doesn't work for me, and hfs+ definately does not work. Macs and PPC are second class citzens in linux.

As far as live cds go dyne:bolic is super for accessing files without worring about permissions.
You can do any editing of other partitions you want. Of course that's dangerous but it's still a great live cd.

Thank you Bodhi. I have to setle for Tomcat then. I will try BEA WebLogic as well, because I want to run a EJB container with Kanotix.

With the more friendly interface, I think that I will use Kanotix for my development work on my laptop. All Eclipse, BlueJ and the like, I can download and install on a harddisk partition, and I can run it from Kanotix. I use Fedora with my desktop, and JBoss runs OK there.

The only problem now is I have a D-Link DWL-650+ wireless card that Kanotix recognizes and is able to scan Wireless access point. However, it can never really connect, though I can connect with the same card with Win XP Professional to the same Wireless access point. Do you have any idea why ?

Thank you,
Linh.

Nope, no ideas. I haven't tried wireless under Linux. Hey, Eon I like that Dyna:bolic will let you change things without having to ask permission. Stux is the same way. Like you said its probably not real secure, but what does it matter when your running a live CD. I never liked asking permission from my mom, boss, or wife and I certainly don't like to ask the Operating System for permission to change a file.

Yahoo ! It works. I get information from this topic:
http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12351

First, I have to do the manual configuration (modifying the /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/network/interfaces) according to this link:
http://hardware.newsforge.com/hardware/04/05/28/1738226.shtml?tid=65&tid=81

After that, I still have to do as Guitare Geek said:
type - su root
then type - iwconfig wlan0 essid "Network Name"

my card is detected as "wlan0"

Now I am posting this post from Kanotix Linux, using wireless card D-Link Airplus DWL-650+ from my laptop.
