Hi i need some help with my XF86 config :)

Alright so i'm new and well i'm not that good with computers >_<

well i installed a nividia video driver to play this game (Savage).

When i started it in The consol the error came up that i didn't have a GLX file thingy.

So a friend told me to go into XF86 to make one or something and there isn't a module section or dri to change to GLX so heres my XF86 and if someone could help me that would be great :D.

It looks like you posted the file /etc/X11/XF86Config.

The file you should have posted is: /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

If your config file is set up properly, there should be a point in it that looks something like this:

Alright so i got into the XF86config-4 and deleted the dri and Gl thingy (ya forgive my terminology) and the glx is in the file but when i start it up it still says that Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".

I've read that you had installed nvidia driver.
From your XF86config-4....it looks like your nvidia driver is not running(3d acceleration).
You need to edit one line so that nvidia driver can load and recognized:

ok so i did all that but it still don't work >_< maybe i just didn't download nvidia yet lol....Well just incase could someone give me a site for nvidia downloads oh and in my XF86 config thingy theres this at the bottom i was wondering if i have to delete this too.

ok so i did all that but it still don't work >_< maybe i just didn't download nvidia yet lol....Well just incase could someone give me a site for nvidia downloads oh and in my XF86 config thingy theres this at the bottom i was wondering if i have to delete this too.

If the driver isn't on the cd, then get Kano's installer script.

download the script, and as root do install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh

Ok so i saved the nvidia file thingy and i tried to run it in consol but this is what happened...

root@Aaron:/home/aaron# install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh
bash: install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh: command not found
root@Aaron:/home/aaron# exit
exit
aaron@Aaron:~$ install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh
Error: You must be root to run this script!

so what do i do now???

If you are going to use kano's script, you need to download two files:

1)install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh http://kanotix.com/files/install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh

2)install-kernel-source-vanilla.sh http://kanotix.com/files/install-kernel-source-vanilla.sh

First, open konsole and run:
1)su
2)enter password
3)sh install-kernel-source-vanilla.sh
4)wait till the process finnish
5)sh install-nvidia-6629-debian.sh

Ok so i didn't all that stuff with the nvidia and well i think i'm screwed >_<

So i downloaded it all but some errors came up and right now i'm using knoppix off a cd right now but i can't get to the login screen normally.

The big black consol comes but and i try to get in by startx and xdm and kdm and F7 and stuff but its not letting me in and when i do startx there are lots of fatal errors saying stuff about my kernel aint right and that to make sure my 2.4 or 2.6 is setup right.....oh and that the nvidia driver is like bugged up >_<.

I guess..kanotix kernel is not compatible with knoppix.
You can change to previous state by editing xf86config-4 using knoppix cd.
Open konsole:
su
enter root password
mount /dev/hdx /mnt/hdx ..**x=knoppix partition
chroot /mnt/hdx
mc **use mc to edit xf86config-4
change "nvidia" to "nv"

reboot.

Try nvidia driver from their site:
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-6629/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run

Boot knoppix using kernel 2.4.
In KDM login.........choose to login to konsole.
run: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run
Edit again xf86config-4 and change "nv" to "nvidia"
startx

Above procedure is only for kernel2.4, you only able to use nvidia driver using kernel2.4.(so next time you boot, choose kernel2.4).

For kernel2.6, you need to recompile your kernel.

In order to run the nvidia installer successfully, he needs to have the kernel source and headers installed. It doesn't look like they come with the Knoppix CD.

Frankly, if he really must have the nvidia drivers, and wants a way to easily install them, I suggest he try Kanotix (http://www.kanotix.com) rather than Knoppix.

Knoppix do comes with kernel source and kernel header (last time I check in knoppix 3.4), but only for kernel 2.4.
That's why I suggest him to boot using kernel 2.4 and install that driver.

Yes it is much easier to install nvidia driver using kanotix......I use kanotix too.. :D :D
