CD-ROM drive just doesn't work right

Whenever a put a cd in my cd drive other than a knoppix cd, the cd drive reports that there is no cd to read. If i put in a knoppix cd, it works find, but lets say i put in a burned cd that works on most computers normally or even a stamped/printed cd then it doesn't work. It doesn't make sense.

I'm using a IBM T22 thinkpad w/ a removable cd drive.
