Hi,

I'm attempting to create a troubleshooting tool for my work. I want to fit knoppix (Don't need open-office or the games) AND a Windows XP install onto a single 1gb pqi Memory stick. I have been reading about how to boot to a USB stick, but is there a way to get grub on there as well so I could boot to either the Knoppix OR the XP install? I am just looking for a tool that I can carry with my keys that can troubleshoot dead PC's and then rebuild them if they are physically sound, but dead OS.

TIA!!

Have you considered using a creditcard size CD instead? You can carry it in your wallet, start by checking DSL. I haven't tested it myself (I'm downloading it as we speak).

You might need to remaster either DSL or Knoppix to only include what you need. Example: some people would like Samba, some would leave out the X system, etc.

I have been using Knoppix 3.6 (on CD) for troubleshooting up 'till now. It was nice because it found nearly every bit of hardware that we have thrown at it. Very nice package. And then I also have been carrying around an XP install disk. The purpose of all this was to not have to carry around that XP install disk, or not have to run back to my desk to get it. I know that I can fit the entire XP install CD onto a 512 mb SanDisk Cruizer Mini (When you strip out the Windows 9x & WinNT migration tools, it is 461mb), and I keep hearing about people booting knoppix from a 512mb card, so I thought that I might be able to dualboot XP install and Knoppix on one 1gb card.

Take a look at CD SHell http://www.cdshell.org/.
Also 7 distros on 1 Live CD, as seen on Distrowatch.com Weekly - http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20041129#1

If you are a fan of mini Linux live CDs, you might be interested in "Multi Distro", a compilation of several bootable mini live CDs on one disk. The latest version includes no fewer than seven distributions; these are SLAX 4.2.0 (http://distrowatch.com/slax), BeatrIX November 04 (http://distrowatch.com/beatrix), Damn Small Linux 0.8.4 (http://distrowatch.com/damnsmall), INSERT 1.2.16 (http://distrowatch.com/insert), SAM 1.1 (http://distrowatch.com/sam), GeeXboX 0.99 (http://distrowatch.com/geexbox), and Recovery Is Possible (http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip/). The CD also comes with Memtest86, a memory diagnostic program. All these options are neatly arranged in the initial GRUB menu - just take your pick and boot whichever distribution you fancy trying out today. The project doesn't seem to have an official web site, but the latest ISO image, version 2.0, is available for free download from here: ftp://ftp.iasi.roedu.net/mirrors/multidistro/2.0/
