Hd-install and device mapper driver??

I did a hd-install of the V3.7 cd on a dual cpu PC. Command

# lilo

results in (even when no changes are made to /etc/lilo.conf)

/dev/mapper/control: open failed: no such device
Is device-mapper driver missing from kernel?
