overlay filesystem

I read something about knoppix including experiments in an overlay filesystem in v3.4

I'm just curious if there is any more progress in that area, and specifics on what the experiments in overlay filesystem were.

Does it have anything to do with how /etc consists of mostly softlinks to the CDROM?
