If you have a new or newish laptop that SUCCESSFULLY boots Knoppix, then PLEASE post (a) version of Knoppix, and (b) the model number and cpu details here. Does all hardware work? Did you need cheatcodes etc?

I'm having a hard time finding ones that I know will boot (given that store managers are often not happy about letting me try booting livecds). There is an astounding lack of information on the web concerning Knoppix on new laptops. :!:

My laptop works with it, although it's not exactly new... HP ze4125 1.4GHz Athlon XP 256MB (I upgraded to 512MB) 40GB. I have to use noscsi and acpi=off boot options for it to boot, but it works absolutely fine.

What stores are you going to? Did they actually tell you no? Remember, you are THEIR customer... just explain that you want to buy a laptop that will boot this linux CD, and that it does not change or do anything. If he says no, tell them that some other store will get your money then. Be firm with them, It's not like you're spending a few bucks, it's quite an investment! Oh, and the bigger the store, the less they will probably care what you do lol.

Edit: Opps forgot to mention the versions... 3.3 boots absolutely fine, 3.4 and 3.6 need the options. I'll have 3.7 to test very soon, I'm on dial up! :P

Thanks vm for your helpful reply Matrox. I'm not in the US & dealers here are more worried about voiding warranties etc. Some will not even turn laptops on because WinXP has to be registered on the first boot.

If the forum moderator is reading this: perhaps this thread could be made a sticky? www.linux-on-laptops.com just does not have enough information about newish models.

HP Pavillion ze4240 / Athlon moble XP CPU

Knoppix 3.1 booted fine. Everything worked (everything I tested anyway, sound was good, network worked immidately on boot through my router.) I did not test the built-in modem and had no expectation that it would work. I resized the NTFS partition to make space for a FAT partition on the disk (so I could write files to the disk). I did not install to disk.

I used it for about a month with no problems. One day I finally allowed XP to install the "security updates" that it had been nagging about. After that event I could no longer get on the network. The details of that are in this thread: http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2117&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
and this thread: http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2164&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

With either version 3.3 or 3.4 (sorry, I forget which) I suddenly could no longer boot (I would hang during the boot). I tried a lot of cheat codes but nothing worked. Old versions continued to boot properly. About 6 months later (not to say I put 6 months of work into this one thing) I finally found that a combination of two cheat codes, noscsi and acpi=off, would allow the system to work. I have had to use these codes ever since. By the way, these codes also get me past the NIC problem I mentioned above, so I no longer have to do the manual reset and netcardconfig that I explained in the above threads.

I have a Belkin 802.11b PCMCIA card (ver. 2101) and also a Dlink DWL-650 802.11b PCMCIA wireless card for the notebook. I have never gotten either to work with Knoppix or any live Linux CD. Again, I have not installed to hard drive and I am not trying to get the wrapper and such to work from a CD boot, but neither card seems to be supported by Knoppix. It would be nice if Knoppix, or at least some of the more hacker orriented live CD's would support either of these wireless cards, but I can live without it.

I just last night loaded knoppix v3.6 to my 8500. Booting from CD works like a charm with no real problems (at least none that I've found, but it was just last night and I'm only getting back to it now).

The laptop is almost or is a year old, but it does have 512mb ram and a 40GB drive. It is a 2MHz P4. The one thing that does not really look good is the screen (on the laptop it's 15" wide) and the text and resolution aren't that great. Wireless card works great (that's how I'm getting here - via cable modem to a wireless adapter). USB works great, in fact, the CD was able to detect everything with no problems (I did boot as "no scsi" cuz I don't have any, so why look).

In that I'm new to these formus, I need to do some looking around, but my friends' Compaq (laptop) which is a couple of years old (1.2 Mhz P3, 512mb ram, 40GB drive, CDROM and DVD (separate devices)) did not boot from the CD (same one my Dell does boot from). It started but would hang very soon after that.

edit: I've loaded v3.7 today (Live CD). It too, works like a charm...

I have one problem with my laptop, it's an Acer 1705Sci P4 3Ghz, 512RAM, 120G HD, NVidia FX go 5600
Knoppix doesn't recognizes my graphic card, it's no problem to boot in my 1280x1024 resolution but when I play a movie
the picture's not so good, I'm searching for drivers now for this graphic card but havent found them yet, but I'm just using knoppix
for a week now.

I just setup a dual boot (XP Pro SP2 and Knoppix 3.7) on my:

B3 Intel Centrino 12.1" Slim BMobile.
(it's laptops that we sale, not some big manufacturer brand)
Intel M 1.6Ghz/2M Dothan uFCPGA2
Integrated 256MB uSODIMM DDR333
40GB
Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME video
CDRW/DVD
Intel 802.11bg PRO2100 (although device manager shows 2200)

Here is pictures (http://www.ramsinks.com/test.aspx) in case you wanted to see it.
About 2lbs.

Blank screen. I had to use 'fb1024x768' to make it work - otherwise it just gave me a blank screen.

Works great. Although I did have an issue of installing Knoppix and lilo, then rebooting and having no lilo - it just went to XP. I just re did the process and now lilo works. Incase somebody googles for it: "After install no lilo just XP". - Just re-do it.

Also I cannot get the audio to work or the WiFi to work. I'm not really concered about the Wifi because I just ordered an Orinoco Classic Gold. The audio is a SoundMAX intergrated. Anybody know how to get that to work?

**Preliminary Report**

Quick summary: v3.7 boots OK, no cheatcodes applied. No KDE toolbar in 1440x768 mode; 1024x768 OK. I'd call the installation a basic success. it was absolutely amazing to watch Knoppix detect everything and bring my laptop up as a functional Linux machine with no intervention required!

Laptop info:

P4, 3 GHz
1 GB RAM
Toshiba 80 GB, 5400 rpm HDD, formatted as one NTFS partition
nVidia GEForce Go 5200, 64 MB video RAM, 1440x990 17" screen
Realtek AC-97 sound chip
Alps touchpad
Pioneer K12D DVD/CD R/W
Atheros 802.11g wireless

I just received my Knoppix 3.7 CD yesterday, so I have only about two hours experience with the package. I fooled around with Linux in the kernel 0.95 days and haven't worked with Linux since, so I'd rate myself a Linux newbie, just about as new as can be.

Knoppix booted up to a 1024x768 KDE desktop, or into a 1440x900 desktop by including "screen=1440x900" command in the boot command. In 1440x900 mode, KDE didn't display a toolbar.
I need to follow up on this problem as I learn more about Linux in general, and Knoppix specifically.
1024x768 is fine, though, for preliminary testing.

Knoppix recognized my USB, Ethernet, and Firewire systems.. I didn't see any mention of wireless networking or (of course) the internal modem. It automatically found and activated the PCMCIA system and, of course, the CD-ROM drive. Sound output seems to work OK.

The biggest surprise was the Alps touchpad working right out of the box. I didn't expect that, at all. (It works as a normal 2-button mouse. The right-edge vertical scroll function doesn't work. No surprise there - it only recently became functional in XP with the latest - buggy - Alps XP driver. It will take the Linux world a while to catch up.)

I was able to successfully install Knoppix in the ramdisk, but haven't yet tested Knoppix' handling of the CD or DVD capabilities of this machine. Since there's not much RAM left for the system and no HDD write access, I suspect that I won't be able to do much with the drive unless I install Knoppix on the HDD. Likewise, I haven't actually connected anything to the USB, Firewire, Ethernet, or PCMCIA ports to see if they actually work.

I'll be happy to follow this up as I gain experience, if anyone is interested.

Thanks for these forums, and particularly, thanks to everyone involved in Knoppix' development. It's an amazing package!

Best Regards,

Tom
Seattle

Further info:

-- I can burn CD-R's just fine by loading Knoppix into the ramdisk with the toram switch at boot.
-- Starting Knoppix with the screen=1440x900 switch brings my machine up in the 1400x1050 mode, pushing the toolbar off the bottom of the KDE desktop screen.
-- I can't get Knoppix to recognize my USB flash drive.

Feb 16, 2005:

-- Installed Knoppix to the hard drive. It was very easy and goof-proof. For those struggling with CD/USB drive or poor man's HDD installations, go for the full HDD configuration. Your life will be much simpler.

-- The display is now working in 1440x900 using the new nVidia Linux driver "nvidia," found at http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html .
-- I've learned that the SmartLink driver, slmodem-2.9.10 ( http://www.smlink.com ), is supposed to drive this machine's winmodem.

Feb 17, 2005:
-- Verified that the CDROM works. No setup changes required.
-- The USB thumb drive is now recognized by hotplug after the HDD installation, and automounts as /mnt/sda1. However, I get no KDE desktop icon. Not a big problem...

Feb 19, 2005
-- Good news and bad news: The good news is that the modem is working. The bad news is that it's not working in Knoppix, but works just fine in Kanotix.

The only way I could get the modem to work was with the two Debian packages sl-modem-source-2.9.9a-i386.deb and sl-modem-daemon-2.9.9a-i386.deb under Kanotix. The .deb packages installed just fine under Knoppix, but KPPP didn't see the modem.

I'm sure I could sort out the problem if I knew a good deal more about Linux, but solving this problem is way over my head right now. I'm just happy that Kanotix got me on the air.

Well, that's it for this post. The machine is now, in my opinion, a functional XP/Linux machine. I'm happy, and I'll now go out and learn Linux.

Many thanks to the posters here on Knoppix forums, and those who have shared their experience on the net.. This machine would have been dead in the water without your advice!

Dell Inspiron 1100

Intel 82845GM Graphics Controller

Using Knoppix 3.7 I can boot into X without any cheatcodes needed.
HOWEVER, If you use any (I assume unless they broke it in an update, don't particularly relish the task of flashing my bios with previous versions over and over again) bios revision prior to A32, it is impossible to get X to run in anything higher then 640x480 at 60hz, even with cheatcodes.

Now, at the startup, which was the same as before, when you pick whatever kernal with whatever cheat code, it says you've passed an invalid video number. Pressing space to skip choosing another one (with the A32) revision will boot into X, at 1024 x 768. Prior to the A32 revision when I tried to do that, X failed to load, unless I used scan at that menu.

If any other information is needed let me know :)

heh - edited to correct a typo I saw, I hate typos.

Edited: I'm a retard from Retardia. - Just noticed that in my bios the vid card was on 1mb, turning this to 8mb, fixes the undefined/invalid video number at startup. --though doesn't fix the prior to A32 640x480 bios problem :)

Hi everyone,
My Sony VAIO VGN-FS115Z (http://vaio.sony-europe.com/ShowProduct.do?site=ite_en_GB&category=VN+FS+Series&product=VGN-FS115Z) boots successfully, although acpi=off is required.
The touchpad works.
USB does not work (my mouse, printer, scanner, modem are USB so I can't test them ATM).
No sound. The soundcard (Realtek AC'97) wasn't working in Win XP sp2 either until I installed drivers from realtek.com (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True).
Also, I wish I could set screen size to 1200x800 (might want to use recent Nvidia drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-6629.html)).

Olive, add the modelines below to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Modeline "1280x800" 68.56 1280 1336 1472 1664 800 801 804 824 -HSync +VSync
Modeline "1280x800" 80.58 1280 1344 1480 1680 800 801 804 827 -HSync -Vsync

You'll also need to add the 1280x800 resolution to the screens sections.

Hi all,

I have a hard drive install of Knoppix 3.7 on an hp zv5270us where everything important seems to work.

On board Realtek 10/100, nVidia 440 MX 64Meg, alps touchpad, dvd-rw should work, I just checked and there's a typo in menu.lst, sound works. It's plugging along at 800MHz, I'll have to get powernow! working. It works great in my Gentoo amd64 install in 'on-demand' mode.

The winmodem has no Linux driver, no great loss. The onboard Broadcom wireless works in Gentoo with the LinuxAnt driverloader, so I imagine it will work under Knoppix as well

Only one problem so far, the usb mouse locks up after a while and I'm reduced to the touchpad :(
I'll have to figure that one out... The touchpad is difficult compared to a real mouse.

Cheers,

My specs:

2.66 GHz P4 (Desktop Processor)
64 MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 M9
60 GB HDD (7200 rpm)
512 MB of RAM
Realtek AC (forgot the exact model) sound card

Works great without cheats on Knoppix 3.7 but I've lost sound on Knoppix 3.8.1. Anyone know how to fix this, like a cheat code or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Works great "out of the box" on this 2004 Dell Inspiron 5100. I had no problems at all, with the exception of my Linksys Wpc54G wireless card(and I refuse to pay $20 for the win driver conversion) not being found. Other than that, everything functions beautifully.

I have a hp pavilion ze4500 I'm using knoppix 3.8.1 & 3.9.1 Both will boot and both will run, albeit with some glitches, I have an AMD Athlon 2400+ w/1024MB DDR SDRAM. It has booted best w/ the noacpi option. Be sure your disk is clean and that the download will pull up on a comparable desktop (so you know it works). I tried every version from 3.3 through 3.7 without success. It wasn't until the adition of the unionfs that I was finaly able to access the I-net. I did get 3.6 to boot and while I got 3.7 to boot it kept crashing no matter What I did. Like I suggested I did use 3.7 on the home desktop a hp pavilion 733n. If the salesperson isn't willing to let you boot a live CD standing beside you (he might learn something) then you really don't need to purchase from them. There ARE other sources to purchase, especially when they know that the ability of the equiptment to load your disk is a purchase point.
I wish you good luck and I have heard that some of the intel chip/cpu's will not run Knoppix/linux uner any conditions.

I know this is somewhat incoplete but I hope it is useful. I used Knoppix 3.8 with each machine. I didn't get the exact compaq model as the section manager, well read on-

I recently started the process of evaluating laptops for replaement of four next year. I did NOT evaluae HP as I already know that they tend to configure their hardware so that it works with Knoppix/Linux only with some serious reconfiguration and workarounds unless they set the machine up for their proprietary Linux.
I went to Best Buy who is the largest supplier in the area. Forst I looked at whatwas available. I limited the systems to the following base requirements. AMD cpu with 32 or 64 bit processor, 256-512 ram prefferably DDR or SDram

Toshiba 10721 - 360J series with Intel Celeron will not load, Knoppix hangs before hardware detection.

Gateway7510GX 64bit SCSI
Had to noscsi, noacpi. Bios overrides noacpi and will not load apm. Loading is very slow but it does function. The right click function won't work on the touchpad but does work with external mouse. many small glitches.

Compaq 64bit AMD
Clean load. Pointer and tap sensitivity needs to be decreased significantly and the keyboard accelerator needs to be at or near minimum. The capslock is reversed and will not clear. TO do standard you need to hit the shift key.

At this point I was preparing to do some program testing when the department manager came up to me and even knowing I was looking at replacing potentially 4 laptops he told me that I couldn't use the knoppix disk. His rational was that if we let one person do it we have to let everyone do it. He wasn't flexible nor did the concept of watching to insure the disk the potential purchaser uses isn't toxic or loads running programs.
He got a little pissy then and I told him that if I wanted to mess up his laptops, I didn't need the Knoppix disk to do it. I was asked to leave the store. I let the store manager know abut the potential sale he lost the store and she was pretty red faced when I walked out.
Incidently I posted this to the general laptop forum by mistake. hope it doesn't cause too much confusion. :)

I have been using Knoppix v 3.9 on my new Gateway 6810GZ laptop. It's a Centrino chipset with a Pentium M 1.7GHZ, 512 MB Ram, 60GB HD, Intel Graphics, etc...

The Conexant sound is not detected and my efforts to get it to work has been unsuccessful. I was able to get the wireless to work only after changing out routers.

This laptop is a variation of their M360 and it is only available at Best Buy....but I got it for 899 with no rebates.

Hi,

I have tried three notebooks so far and the results are as follows:

Dell Latitude CP-R 400 PII 256 Meg. Runs 3.4 and 3.6 without cheat codes.

Sony PCG-FR130 AMD Athlon 2000 M with 512 Meg Ram. Runs 3.4, 3.6, 3.8.2, 3.9, and the LinuxTag 4.0 DVD. ALL without cheatcodes. The only real issue I encountered was with DVD-R Media. The DVD Drive apparently does not read ANY DVD-R media reliably. It prefers DVD+R media and worked without any issues once I burned +R copy of DVD. A firmware update did nothing to correct this, but it did improve the CD writing slightly.

Compaq R3XXX Series, AMD Athlon 2800M, 512 Meg Ram. Runs 3.9 without cheatcodes. Will be trying 4.0 DVD sometime soon. Sorry, this is my girlfriends machine and I do not know the exact model number since she is not here right now and neither is the notebook. I just get to back it up and fix it if it breaks, just like her other PCs, Heating and Air Conditioning, Electrical Wiring, Light Fixtures, and her car, and the rest of her house and......... Just kidding, She is not quite THAT bad.

These units do not have wireless network cards and I do not use or test the modems. Displays are acceptable and sound works on all. Internal Network Cards and PCMCIA network card in the Dell worked without issues. I do not really put Knoppix through the paces and a more experienced user might notice something amiss. All seemed to be running ok and temperatures seemed normal. (I have a digital infrared thermometer and informally compared temps unders Windows and Knoppix and saw little difference.) Printing was OK once I figured out how to configure various units. 3.9 seemed more reliable for printing with some HP printers, but it may just be my imagination.

USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 apparently worked on these units as equipped. The Sony and the Compaq are equipped with IEEE-1394 and apparently worked. I did not try burning disks or large file transfers on external devices, but the limited trial was successful and both external drives I tried were recognized in most Knoppix Versions as I can recall. I did not connect any Camcorders or Digital cameras, so I cannot report on that.

I will probably have a few more Laptops to try over the next few months, but I am limited to These few and MANY Big White Boxes for now.

Knoppix runs without problems.
Only thing is, my usb stick is not recognized automatically.

I've got keyboard problems with Knoppix V3.8.1 on a Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook. The boot prompt is the last point where the keyboard works, during boot process or in a console nothing happened if I pressed a key. In the Bugs wiki it's reported exactly. I hope the bug will be corrected in newer versions of Knoppix.

Looking good!

I doubt that the TV tuner will work... ah well.

I have a Dell Inspiron 510m. Let me know if you want the full spec.

Under Knoppix 3.3 nearly everything worked straight off. Only cheat code needed was screen=1280x1024 to get higher res. (I have the SVGA+ 1400x1050 LCD). Don't think the 1400x1050 works. One thing that does not seem to be in 3.3 is Wifi. Also having trouble getting a home on my USB hard drive to get recognised.

To try to advance I got the DVD version of Knoppix 4.02. This has been something of a disaster. To such an extent that I wonder if it is really Knoppix 0.402! It took me a whole weekend to get the display working. It was split in half and at 640x480. I had to move the mouse 'round the back' to get anything done. Finally I found that xmodule=i810 got things working. Once I got there I added screen=1280x1024 and that was the display OK. All efforts to use vsync and hsync seem to get ignored.

Next problem with 4.02 is that, while I get nice eye-candy icons for my USB partitions, none of them are mountable! I get a message like 'not a block device'. Now how can Knoppix get itself into this state? 3.3 has worked fine on at least three laptops so what has happened with 4? This USB problem is all the more exasperating as my main hard drive has died.

Next problem is that the Wifi card - Truemobile 1300 is not recognised. A pain.

So, in conlusion, anyone running 4.02 on an Inspiron 510m needs the cheat code xmodule=i810. I emphasise this as part of the problem was that I found many bits of advice amongst which was the right one. There seem to be a lot of people posting answers to stuff who are not actually speaking from experience. They are a danger.

Thanks for Knoppix,

Norman

Just installed Knoppix 4.0.2 on a Sony Vaio laptop (1.6 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, dvd-rw...) runs much faster than M$ XP Pro.
Now all I gotta do is get Knoppix to recognize the widescreen, then we'll be running smooth as glass.
As of the time of this post, all other systems and peripherals seem to be working just fine without any manual tweaking needed.

I've got a newish laptop and here are the specs:
HP Pavilion (not sure of model number)
AMD64 Turion ML-28 1.6GHz
512 MB ram
ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M 128 mb

The only thing I see that does not work is the wireless card (Broadcom) but that might be something in the bios i havn't tooled around with yet....but here's the interesting stuff

Knoppix runs extremely fast...not to boast, I mean, EXTREMELY fast. So fast, that the CLOCK goes about twice as fast as it should, and typing is really hard because even if my finger is on a key for a millisecond too long, it will type 16 letters that i didn't intend to type. I'm not exactly sure how operating systems work deep down, but I'm guessing that the time for calculating how much time should pass in one second is controlled by the hardware, which is why I am very perplexed as to why the entire computer and clock is running at an abnormally fast speed. I'm not really looking for a way to fix this, I'd just like to let you know cause it seems like a very interesting bug!

Thanks for the info. I'm using an Inspiron 510m myself and had trouble with the resolution. It's fixed now :-)

Fully working, all onboard devices work with Knoppix 4.02
However, for good performance I would allways use the cheatcode
Knoppix dma because in some rare cases (not sure if this is a firmware problem since
the 6000 knows 2 firmwares) knoppix will fail to install, reinstalling with knoppix dma
solves the problem. (also works with Suse 9.1 and Knoppix 3.6)
No bluetooth module available for testing

Portege R100, ultra thin notebook, Centrino 1ghz, very light very cool but won't install knoppix through
the pcmcia cdrom, it boots from it but drops down to a limited shell, I've tried the cheatcode
Knoppix ide2=0x180 nopcmcia

Mandriva installs without problem, so using the data from mandriva I found out that the pcmcia cdrom is located
not at 0x180 but at 0x100, alas no effect.

It could be possible to use Knoppix 4.02 on the R100 but not without loading additional modules through the usb fdd.

The story will continue :-) I haven't tried all options yet.

Update April 2006, I've done it. Knoppix can be installed but difficult, you need to activate the pcmcia slots, which means booting by usb floppy. However, Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy Badger" activates the pcmciaslot during install (both the live and the install cd) and activates everything onboard. Knoppix 4.02 can be installed but with more work (build a boot disk with the pcmcia modules....) Not easy but doable. At this time my R100 test machine is running Ubuntu Debian.

Knoppix runs extremely fast...not to boast, I mean, EXTREMELY fast. So fast, that the CLOCK goes about twice as fast as it should

This is a kernel bug from running 32bit linux on a 64 system, not sure if it has been fixed by now but it sounds like u have the nx6125 like me. (i had the same problems)

HP nx6125 brilliant system Linux supports bluetooth, wlan DVD-/+RW and graphics card fine in Mandriva 2006 64bit edition, doesn't support card reader/finger print sensor and I have not tested tv-out/exoansion slots in system but linux identifies them. No modem support but its a winmodem an am on the network in uni (10Mb/s yey!).
Knoppix didn't support X on my system back in version 3.x but i am burning the 4.0.2 DVD now and will post any success failiure i have, as i say linux works, may just be lack of drivers thats holding back knoppix as that supports everything from the command line :).
Linux has better/comparable support of the laptop as windows under 64bit, pain 2 get windows64 workin on it from what av read but am not going to bother 2 try.

On my Compal DL70 (aka ChemUSA Chembook 2070) with the following specs:
1.73 GHz Pentium M
1GB RAM
128MB Mobility Radeon X600
1680x1050 resolution
Intel Pro Wireless 2915ABG

First, the KNOPPIX-based live CDs I used.

In the KNOPPIX 4.0.1 DVD, it gets to the splash screen as usual. Loads until video driver for my Radeon is not found, then continues with vesa driver at 1024x768. Intel Pro Wireless 2915ABG and Realtek wired NIC work right away, no support for my Winmodem, and volume and hot keys don't work. Tried several of the suggestions in this forum to get 1680x1050, but no results.

With KANOTIX 2005.4, things get better. Loads with xorg ati driver and starts with 1024x768. The "sudo fix-res 1680x1050" command and Ctrl+Alt+Backspace fixes the resolution problem. Wired and wireless NICs work out of the box. Winmodem is detected as an slmodem by knet and dials successfully, but I don't hear it dial. Volume and hot keys don't work.

DSL 2.1b doesn't detect my Winmodem or stretch to the resolution. IPW2915ABG and Radeon might work fine if I use the packages in the DSL repository, but I don't want to write an xfree86 config file from scratch or configure the ipw drivers. Wired NIC works fine.

Here are the other live CDs not based on KNOPPIX that I've used:

Ubuntu 5.10 has similar results to KANOTIX. The xorg ati driver loads right away to 1680x1050. Wired and wireless NICs work out of the box. No Winmodem support. Volume and hot keys don't work at all.

Linspire 5.0.69 (live version is free [gratis], but install version is not) required me to enter the xdriver=vesa cheatcode by pressing e, e, the cheatcode, Enter, and b. If I didn't do that, it would crash at a black screen, which resulted in XP Pro doing a chkdsk. Once I did get it loaded, the resolution was 1024x768. ipw card works fine, but I didn't test the wired NIC. I hope the Linspire developers make a fix to this problem soon.

Hi there.

Knoppix v. 4.0.2 is the first version of knoppix i have succesfully loaded on my Gateway M675. Although it loaded, some hardware was not recognized, the sound card is hopeless (as far as i can tell) and the wireless card is detected (with a wrapper) but dosn't want to work. I swapped out the broadcom wireless card for my GF's intel card and it worked on boot. Also the graphics card is a little glitchy, i cant force any res higher than 1024X768. (what you would expect from ATI). my sys info is:

Intel P4ht 2.8Ghz, 512mb 400Mhz DDRam, ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 w/128mb, 100Gb HDD(fujitsu 5400rpm), Broadcom wireless B/G, sagmatel cmajor sound card, WXGA 1440X900.

PS: oh yeah.... the P4 with HT shows up as dual processors. Two penguins show up on boot screen.

I INSTALLED KNOPPIX THIS WAY: I USED PARAGON IN WINDOWS XP TO PARTITION MY DRIVE. THEN I REBOOT WITH KNOPPIX 4.0 DVD INTO KDE. I OPEN THE ROOT TERMINAL AND TYPE IN "KNOPPIX-INSTALLER" AND FOLLOW THE PROMPTS. BASICALLY I CONFIGURED THE INSTALL TO NOT FORMAT THE DISK, BUT JUST SET THE BOOT FLAG ON MY 2ND PARTITION AND TO SET THE INSTALL FOR "KNOPPIX LIKE ON THE CD" TYPE OF INSTALL. THE OTHERS ALWAYSLOCKED UP AFTER REBOOTING. eVERYTHING PRETTY MUCH SEEMS TO WORK FINE EXCEPT I AM STILL HAVENING TROUBLE FIGURING OUT HOW TO GET MY SCREEN RES UP TO 1280X768, AS OF NOW IT ONLY LETS ME CHOOSE UP TO 1024X768. iF ANYBODY KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL IF YOU WOULD TELL ME THANKS!

U may need to do some tweaking with cheatcodes. Check

http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Cheat_Codes

For an Acer Aspire 5504, the following works:

boot: knoppix noapm noapic noagp xmodule=fbdev

Do a bit of tweaking with the cheatcodes and report back in here the "symptoms" u see.

Gd luck!

I got my Dell Inspiron 2200 running on Knoppix 4.0.2. Most of the devices loaded with no fuss.

I did however have problems recognizing the Dell Wireless 1370 Internal Wireless card. For that I added the config setup steps in my knoppix.sh script on my USB flash media stick so it can do wireless on startup. It easy to setup the wireless manually if you have the bcmwl5a drivers handy and install them via the ndiswrapper script. Then you can run netcardconfig and you're up.

Another issue I'm having is the power management stuff. When I close the lid on the laptop, the system goes into an unrecoverable hiberation-like state. Luckily, I can power down pretty easily in knoppix since most of the corruptable stuff pushed to memory, but it's annoying nonetheless. I did encounter the same problem occasionally when I'd close the lid in WinXP Pro. I might need to update the BIOS or something. Any suggestions are welcome as I really haven't explored this section in depth yet.

Pherhaps allready an oldy but still widely used here, 1ghz Pentium 3 processor
512 mb of ram, 20 gig drive and DVD drive.

Knoppix 3.6 and 4.02 used, both worked without problem, network recognized.
Weird thing, 4.02 installs but on two installs (out of 5) it installs in a lower resolution
(640x480 io 1024x768) no real problem, just adjust the xfconfig as root.

Kanotix 2005.1 works without problems and as a bonus activates the hotkeys for
the soundbuttons.

No luck on getting the tv-out to work..... Yet...

Have knoppix 4.2 running on a new HP dv8000 with no problem - installed to HD not problem but I must an external mouse instead of the touch pad and the dvd drive does not work - which I find strange since it worked fine off the live-dvd. The native wireless card does not work but a D-Link AirplusG (DWL-g630) work right out of the box no problem. Hardwire to the internet was also no problem. USB external hard drives are also no problem.

Anyone have any ideas on the dvd drive?

Also, I want to use a Netgear USB wireless adapter as well but no luck.

Thanks....

I am running an Acer Travelmate 4652 using Knoppix 5.0.1.

This version will boot fully, but with a black screen unless I use the cheat code acpi=off. Using this code, everything boots normally.

I was under the impression that this is most probably an issue with my notebook. However, I booted with GRML, and noted that acpi works in GRML. I receive the following success messages when booting GRML -

ACPI Bios found, activating modules.
ac battery button container fan hotkey processor thermal video
Starting acpidaemon

If it works under GRML, I'm sure that Knoppix could be fixed so that acpi could work with it also.

Thank you for all of the good work.

1.6 Ghz Pentium M
1 gig RAM
80 GB 4200 RPM HDD

Sound works fine
all system peripherals work fine with the exception of my Ethernet connection and my intel pro wireless 2200bg wireless connection, neither of them can be configured in any way I've found;

mbox 2 doesn't work (audio interface) but that is to be expected, since it only works in conjunction with ProTools

I'd really love to get my wireless/Ethernet working, but I've not been able to figure it out thus far.

Acer Travelmate 2424. It boots up knoppix 4.0.2 and works fine except for wireless. Strangely GRML which was based on knoppix, works well including wireless right out of the box.

EDIT: Tested Ubuntu 6.06. It worked really well with my Acer 2424 right out of the box.

Dell Latitude D610, 1.8 GHz Pentium M, Intel 915 video, 1400x1050 native resolution, broadcom 57xx gigabit NIC

Knoppix 5.0.1 CD. I haven't tested the wifi in Knoppix yet (Intel ipw2200bg), but everything seems to work OK. I get 1280x1024 using this:

knoppix dma screen=1280x1024 vsync=60 xmodule=i810

Knoppix 5.01 CD version:
Edit: addition - Acer Aspire 3004LCi - Athalon 3000+ (1.8GHz)
The only thing that does not work is my wireless. The internal broadcom wireless is identified but won't work, my Netgear MA401 card works or so I think except kwifimanager won't let me change the automatic settings in the configuration editor to that eth0 assigned to the MA401... so it uses the broadcom all the time... well, it lets me change it, but the menu bar on kwifimanager still says eth2 rather than the eth0 assigned to my MA401 card. If I reopen kwifi and the configuration editor, it does say eth0, but the menu bar says eth2 still.

I am still using knoppix 4.02 The only issue there is that it doesn't see my battery and 5.01 does.

Edit: addition - Ndiswrapper in 4.02 works with the broadcom wireless card... or if I just want it to work quick, I just put in the Netgear MA 401 or linksys WPC 11, version 3 card in and it is all pretty much automatic to get connected[/b]

If you have a new or newish laptop that SUCCESSFULLY boots Knoppix, then PLEASE post (a) version of Knoppix, and (b) the model number and cpu details here. Does all hardware work? Did you need cheatcodes etc?

(a) Successfully booted Knoppix 5.0.1 CD -de-
(b) Acer Aspire 1693WLMi Intel Pentium M 750 1.8 GHz / 1 GB DDR2 / ATI Mobility X700 128 MB VRAM / 15.4"

Cheatcodes:
- for getting Knoppix to boot and running X
"knoppix acpi=off xmodule=fbdev"

-for getting also the radeon driver to work in a 1280x800 screen resolution
(the process is booting into "init 2" - editing the xorg.conf - running X with "init 5"
mostly quotation marks mean this has to be typed at the terminal, when editing the file it shoukd be exactly like written here (even with quotation marks"

"knoppix 2 acpi=off"
editing the xorg.conf with "joe /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
in section "Monitor" deleted all VESA modes
in section "Device" replaced Driver "<whatever>" with Driver "radeon"
added Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,Auto" before EndSection
in section "Screen" in every Subsection "Display" added to every Modes line "1280x800" in first place
press "CTRL-K x" to save & exit joe
type "init 5" and press ENTER to run X

explanations:
if MonitorLayout was not added the display remained black
if 1280x800 was not added the 1024x768 mode was used instead, not really user friendly
I described everything in detail since I am new to Linux/Knoppix and had even a hard time to edit a file on the command line with editor joe, for info type "man joe" in a terminal window or press "CTRL-K h".

Additional Hardware:
- network card working
- additional hardware like modem, wlan, cardreader could not test
- for info https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AcerAspire1692WLMi (similar model)

Alrighty, I just got the CD burned finally after running the STD version, but now I've gotten the 5.01 CD and it works awesome. WAY better :D

KDE!!!! never worked on this laptop properly before, now it works flawlessly.

Compaq Presario V4000

Only problem, is the Wireless Card that comes with it, not supported. It's one of those killswitches that Windows knows to enable (with the button or without) and Linux doesn't know how :/ If only we could figure that part out LOL

Anyway, I am gonna get a WMP54G I think (borrow from work) and if I can get it to work from the CD with a slight modification to config's then i'll post exactly what I did starting from boot. Perhaps a install kind of cmd to adjust some sort of config... i dunno lol.

As far as the keys are concerned, most don't work. The Fn keys don't work 100% and the multimedia keys are well windows based ... ugh. Anyway...

Happy Hunting :D

I installed Konppix 5.0 live on DvD on Acer Aspire 5300WLMi.

AMD Turion 64M-32 processor
512M DDR
80 G HDD
802.11b/g wireless LAN

Every hardware can be correctly recognized except for the wireless LAN. Actually I have not any idea to fix the problem. Anybody knows, please tell me. Thanks in advance
