How would one find the source of the knoppix automagic hardware install (eg the url), and compile it into a personally built debian system for run on first time startup, or a set startup number? I am needing to make a base install image, iso it and burn it so we can install multiple times the same image, and when installed, auto detect and configure hardware. is this even possible? Or perhaps anyone has any ideas on a related subject to this.

from what I understand, there is a utility called ghost that is excellent for this.. It will apparently run both Windows and Linux network installs so that you can install all the computers at once. I have a friend that uses it for a lab he runs on campus. He swears by it... and despite the fact that he is a Red Hat freak, i suppose its worth mentioning because it might take care of ya.

You might want to check out systemimager, ghost isn't free software afaik.
