I use Knoppix quite a bit for file recovery on unbootable Windows machines. Now I'm trying to recover a forgotten Windows 2000 password but don't know where the password file is located or how to change it so that I can open Windows. Can anyone help?

im not too sure if this will work or not with windows 2000 but i know 100% it will work with xp, click start go to the control panel, administrators tools, computer management, then go to were you can see user accounts and then right click and set password. you should be able to reset the password with out already having it.

There is a password program which runs on linux OS, either a boot disk or a bootcd which will reset windows passwords. NT, 2000 and XP ChPW Peter Nordhal
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

It chan either change or blank any password. On new systems (XP? 2003?), you will lose stored passwords for applications or sites stored for that user.
