If you're new to linux the bottom line is that knoppix works well with external , controller based modems but not with most pci (not controller based modems) . If you have the time and gumption to try to add modem drivers for your modem a couple of links to check out:

http://linmodems.org/

If you plan to run knoppix from cd, it's probably better to try and find a live cd distro that has drivers for your modem built in. If you have or are planning to install to HD then there is a bit of learning and work to be done, worth the effort if you like this sort of thing.

If you plan on using linux alot, invest in a new modem and enjoy.

Kanotix has ltmodem built in, the command is 'detect-modem.sh'.
