Problems with my floppy

knoppix seems to have problems with my floppy.

firstly it takes a long time to initially read from the drive

then when writing it takes its time and then finally after the drive light goes off it almost immediately comes back on again and the whole process seems to start again

sometimes I have to close the floppy window in KDE to get the process to stop
